Exclamation Verizon V3C Info: Firmware vs BT OBEX and MPT!!

Sorry, this is long, but there seems to be MASS CONFUSION surrounding the Verizon V3C, Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers, and what can be done with Motorola Phone Tools (aka MPT, formerly known as Mobile Phone Tools)...

Three warnings before we go any farther...
    1. BVRP (who makes MPT) has stated there is a bug in the Calendar on the Verizon firmware which could damage the phone!! so proceed with Caution if you wish to use the calendar function in MPT!! BVRP calls it a verizon issue and will not comment as to if Verizon has fixed the firmware or not.

    2. BVRP also warns of a Data corruption issue working with the Verizon V3C... see -> V3C (Verizon version) AT Command and Data Corruption issues

    3. Because Verizon disables features on their phones... BVRP will NOT support any feature Verizon is supposed to have disabled, EVEN IF you make it work with your phone.

Ok, so to sum it up... (much/all of this is taken from my pages, use link in my sig to get there...)

For a "Stock" Verizon V3C with MPT... No matter what firmware you have, you can work with the contacts and calendar over a USB Cable OR Bluetooth. Assuming you have MPT v3.28 or higher. Note: due to calendar bug, it might not be an option for the V3C.
When it comes to MPT's MultiMedia Studio, it depends on the FIRMWARE revision on your phone. There are basically two different firmware versions. One Needs Seem Edits to re-enable the phone's compatibility, the other does NOT.

When it comes to File Transfers via Bluetooth in MPT... MPT uses the same type of "modem like commands" across either USB Cable or Bluetooth. That is NOT the same as Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers...

Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers are NOT needed to transfer files inside MPT.

Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers ARE NEEDED if you want to transfer files via Bluetooth between your PC and Phone, or PDA and phone WITHOUT using MPT. But your PC's or PDA's bluetooth must also support this... Some PC/PDA drivers do NOT support OBEX (example... Microsoft's XP SP2 native bluetooth drivers, or the Microsoft drivers in Windows Mobile 2005 on some PDA's).

GATW_01.0F.02 Initial Verizon release version. Either by "accident" or for some other reason, the ability to do Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers as well as compatibility with the MultiMedia Studio features of Motorola Phone Tools (aka MPT) are ENABLED, and no hacks/seem edits are needed.

GATW_01.0F.03 2nd Verizon release version. There are NO official release notes as to what was fixed. HOWEVER Bluetooth OBEX File Transfers do NOT work and it appears the actual CODE has been removed from the phone, so there is no fix. Also, compatibility with the MultiMedia Studio features of MPT are now DISABLED on the phone, BUT a seem edit will fix this (Seem 2742, Bytes (h) 90, Record 1, Offset 6A, set Bit0=1 or "check the box").

GATW_01.15.04P Long thread discussing this firmware ...
When it comes to the OBEX File Transfer and MPT's MultiMedia Studio capabilities with .04, that depends on what your phone had BEFORE it was upgraded to .04...

    in other words...

.02 or .02 directly upgraded to .04 = BT OBEX File Transfers & MPT's MMS works, no seem edits needed.
.03 or .03 directly upgraded to .04 = BT Obex File Transfers are NOT possible, and MPT's MMS works only after Seem Edit.

NOTE: If your phone came with .04 firmware on it, it was probably .03 upgraded to .04.

But what about these articles I read saying .04 has OBEX??? Yes there were many reports that .04 would put OBEX File Transfer abilities back into the phone. That was an unfortunate situation that started from a Blog entry which was later proved to be wrong. BUT it wasn't until AFTER it was picked up by others and used as a source.. So while the original Blog owner had updated his info in recognition of the error, it was too late for the web sites, etc.. that used it as a source, and they never retracted or changed their stories. SHAME on the few legitimate media outlets who did this only using 1 source, not getting confirmation of that 1 source, running with a story and NEVER correcting their mistake!!

I hope this clears things up for you!!

    Could you repeat that?

Thanks for taking the time to post this. I'll keep this "link copied", because I'm sure there will be 100's of posts asking about .03 and .04 OBEX and other questions that are outlined in your post.....Thanks again for your patience and consideration.

Mark_Venture, I updated the original source which created this mess. It now links to this thread for more information on the subject.

    Original Source (now updated): http://cavemonkey50.com/2006/04/veri...fers-on-razrs/

Over the past week I have also tried to contact some of the media outlets which have published the story, but that hasn't gone to well. No one has contacted me yet.

Oh Cool. Very nice idea! Hopefully that and this thread will help with the many questions now coming in...

BUT many of them are not due to your initial write up!! Just look at the questions in the "I wrote an OBEX tutorial" stickied thread about "I have .03 and I don't work."... Its verizon's fault for making this so mixed up in the first place...

I just added the blurb about that because I just know someone is going to chime in saying that they read about it... (as was done in the LONG .04 discussion...)

One thing I forgot to mention in the initial post...

The V3C with Verizon's firmware does NOT support Bluetooth Object Push (OPP). And there is no way to add or enable that on the Verizon firmware.

OPP is need to send a file/contact from "your phone" to someone else's phone.

It is also needed by some Bluetooth Car Kits (like Lexus), to get your cell phone's phonebook into the car kit.

note: For those Verizon V3C users who wish to take a more advanced route, see the WIKI about flashing with the Alltel firmware, as it does support both BT OBEX FT's and OPP.. but there are many extra steps to get all the verizon features working again and it does void your warranty, and verizon will no longer support your phone.

Just wondering.... I read alot to educate myself about all of this. Do the four letters "WIKI" stand for something?

    Thanks

    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki...
A wiki (IPA: [ˈwiː.kiː] <wee-kee> or [ˈwɪ.kiː] <wick-ey>[1]) is a type of website that allows users to easily add, remove, or otherwise edit all content, very quickly and easily, sometimes without the need for registration. This ease of interaction and operation makes a wiki an effective tool for collaborative writing. The term wiki is a shortened form of wiki wiki which is from the native language of Hawaii (Hawaiian), where it is commonly used as an adjective to denote something "quick" or "fast" (Hawaiian dictionary).
it goes on in more details...

    Mark,

Have you personally been able to get the OBEX file transfer to work on a phone that was flashed from .03 to .02, then to .04? From what I've been reading, everyone's saying that they have full OBEX, but when they actually try file transfers, it's not there. (a lot of these that think it works are also basing it on getting MPT / bluetooth to work not understanding that MPT doesn't use OBEX).
I want what I can't have...but thank God I will find it eventually on Ebay!
    OC3s are nice!

    I don't have a V3C, so I can't check.

There are however, users in that BIG .04 firmware thread that have posted enough data showing that going from .03 to .02 to .04 still has BT OBEX FT's....

BUT this assumes the verizon store did NOT put .03 on there in between....
