Actually, you don't have minutes that expire, it is the money balance that expires.
I haven't heard of the $1 option to extend the time a month, but when I last heard of this, it often depended on what CSR you got ahold of.

If you have a lot of credit on your prepaid account when your minutes are about to expire, it was normal to just buy more minutes time to extend your expiration date, or just ask a CR for an extension if the balance is at least $100. Now that's no longer an option.
But I've heard that we can pay $1 per month to keep what we already have. I'm not clear on whether it actually adds $1 to the balance, or if it's just a fee that extends the expiration by a month.
Does anyone use this option? If so, who do you pay it to? I suppose it's AT&T, but pre-paid phones have always gotten credit put on them by buying a pre-paid code or card from a 3rd party. But if it's to AT&T, can you have it auto-paid, or do you have to call a CR each month?
My minutes expire the 28th of this month, and I still have well over $150. I'm exploring my options.

iPhone 12 Pro is my current phone I carry.
It's looking like I'll have to call a CSR for sure now. I just found out that the $100 option no longer expires after a year. It's now only 90 days. The next option is to pay triple ($300) for one year, or find a new company to deal with.
What is needed to just maintain an account and phone number line depends on the carrier. US Mobile will let the customer maintain a line for a fee of $2 each month; but that is to be without any text/talk/data - NONE.
OR, you can get FREE service on the AT&T network, with the free plan I've posted about in several of the other threads you've posted in, for a one-time $4.99 cost. Based on some of your posts, it seems like it would provide enough service for your needs.

Right, just one. I was just on the paygoonline.com site where it gave me the chance to see if I'm qualified for it, and I got this result:
