I borrowed a wired Dell optical mouse and connected it with a USB-C OTG adapter to the Moto G Pure. It didn't register as being there. The notification drop-down said device attached was charging.
I looked for a way to activate use of a mouse via settings and the Accessibility settings didn't acknowledge it either under "switches."
The optical light on the mouse flashed but nothing happened if I rolled or clicked it.
For a few moments I did see a pointer on screen but it disappeared.
Most of the Logitech or other mouses I'm looking at online don't mention Android compatibility, only Windows, Mac, iOS, Chromebook occasionally.
The YouTube videos show Wireless or wired mouses starting right up and working with USB connection like they're plug 'n play.
I connected the mouse to my Moto Play and it didn't recognize the mouse either just like with the Moto Pure. Then I opened Google Drive and started a document. The mouse began to show up there and I was able to use it.
The cursor sometimes disappeared and reappeared and it was squirrely but I was able to use it to create the document. It pretty much did what I wanted it to do which was to be able to choose items on the menu not just work on the editing screen.
I can use Google voice to text and I can control the screen with touch, or I can use the mouse.
However have to be careful what I tell the mouse to do because I deleted a document without intending to.
Left click seems to pull up the editing menu with cut paste etc. Right click seems to do the same thing except when I'm down on the keypad. Then it seems to pull up the keypad menu.
The scroll wheel scrolls and it clicks on items.
So the experiment worked, I can use a mouse to help with cumbersome items that touch or voice cannot do easily with a particular device.
I may now proceed to buy a wireless mouse with a dongle and see if that's easier to use than one with a wire.
For my purposes it's probably easier to use a mouse for the items I need then to have a Bluetooth keyboard when I only type with two thumbs now because of hand disabilities. I can still roll a mouse around. I can't type on a regular computer keyboard anymore although I used to type for hours a day.
I hope this thread may have helped somebody who is thinking about using a mouse with their cell phone.
The phone needs to be one that is OTG capable because whether or not it's a wireless Bluetooth mouse or a mouse that has a wire that plugs in directly, it still needs to plug into the USB port with a dongle.
