I just watched a YouTube video on aftermarket battery scams. Very interesting. It makes me want to avoid buying a battery unless it's sold by the phone manufacturer.

I thought the battery was starting to decline on my 2019 vintage LG whose battery had a 2018 date. The replacement I got in early 2022 was identical to the original and had a 2021 date, but it didn't last as long as the original battery, and still doesn't.

Earlier, you said that if not for wear and tear, "electronics could be used literally forever and not replaced." That's not really true. Mechanical things like buttons and switches can wear out. Batteries can wear out. But really, none of this stuff wears out before the phone becomes functionally obsolete. I would still be using my LG Ultimate 2 with Android 4.4 from 2015, but by 2019 Google's own apps didn't even work well on it any more. And my Rebel 4 from 2019 still works well now, but with 16GB storage, it can't hold very many apps. Both of these phones were charged to 100% every day and never had any battery problems or any other problems.

Believe me, I understand. I would still be watching CRT TV's if I could. But my TV's didn't wear out because I used them every day. They became obsolete.

One of the things about the aftermarket scam batteries that was demonstrated in the YouTube video was they covered actual battery info with sticky labels that gave false info including manufacturing dates. The actual battery capacity was far less than claimed.

But as far as Google apps not working well on older phones, they're always updating and changing stuff and the older phones aren't equipped to deal with it.

The same for older apps. A newer phone OS can't always deal with apps designed for older operating systems.

When I installed a keyboard on my phones, there was a warning that the app was designed for an older OS (KitKat 4.4 I think). I don't notice any problems on my newer phones.

I may have one or two smartphones with operating systems that old but I don't use them anymore. They aren't very functional on WiFi and have low capacity memories. One is an LG Optimus and the other a ZTE N817.

I wanted to add that I had a complete failure of a battery on a TracFone LG Rebel I got with a year's service on the TF eBay store. I only used it a short while, maybe a few months, and noticed it was doing odd things. Then it quit cold and wouldn't take a charge or switch on anymore.

One day a year or so later it took a charge and booted, but when I shut it down some hours later it once again refused to take a charge or boot. I performed a hard/factory reset on it while I had it on that one day.

I think when it arrived, the battery was almost flat dead and most of my TFs have atleast 50-60% out of the box, so I figured it sat on a shelf a long time before I bought it.

Li-ion batteries can only be stored for any length of time if they are partially charged and not overheated. That's one reason why loose batteries perform so poorly.

Reminds me, I still have a couple of LG Fiestas that I bought from Simple for $10. The real winner, though, was their Huawei Sensa for $20. Very impressive phone for the price and time. I need to dig it out of storage and dust it off.

I'm looking at eBay listings for LG Stylo 3 phones with cracked screens but that still work.

How many different models of LG phone used that same battery?

I know different phone companies called it by a different name but it was probably the same phone.

I wouldn't want to pay much for it because I'm really only interested in the OEM battery. In reality it's probably not worthwhile because for twice 20 bucks I could get a newer refurb from TracFone such as the Moto G Play.

The drawback to buying a refurb from TracFone is that I would have to buy a plan card with it and I already have phones that I could transfer service off of to activate it.

Well, I bought a LG Stylo 3 with a cracked screen for $20.

The seller said they dropped it a week after they bought it and it's been used as a backup since. Supposed to charge and work okay, doesn't look too bad. Battery seems ok (not swollen).

Bought a case with screen protector to cover the cracks in case my Stylo dies (it was a refurb I got from TracFone). That way I can use the cracked one if it works ok on WiFi.

It's amazing how many Stylos there are on eBay with badly shattered screens and no battery and they want almost as much or more than the one I bought.

Mostly scrap haulers selling them, but this one was sold by the owner and they still had the box and documentation.

It's an old phone but if I get one or two years use out of the battery, it's worth the $20. Well, and $7 for the case.

I had a LG Stylo 3 a while back. It's a pretty nice phone. I used it for a while, then I gave it away to someone in need.

I have a LG Stylo 5 here now, activated for a family member to use. It's a nice phone but the 32GB storage is too small for me nowadays.

I have only had one phone have a swelling battery. It was an Alcatel Zip I got as a refurb from TF website for $10. Not a bad little phone. I didn't use it much. A family member used it mostly for streaming music in the basement workshop. A few months ago I noticed the screen was not flat anymore and was looking weird, so I decided it was done for. I was able to do a reset on it to clear it and I took it to the neighborhood AT&T store where they take old phones for recycling.

I have an Alcatel Zip I got from TF website and it's not able to be activated because it's GSM (AT&T) underlying service. I asked a chat CSR if it could be activated around the time when they were doing away with TracFones that were on AT&T or T-Mobile service.

I did have the phone in service for a while and I did like it, but its battery life is weak.

The Stylo 3 with the cracked screen hasn't arrived yet, (Monday according to the tracking notice), but the seller said it charges well, no sign of bloat, and should be good for a few hours a day.

The photos seemed to prove the no bloat claim, and they show the phone boots.

He had 100% pos feedback, quick to answer questions. He was the original owner.

I avoided listings from waste recyclers that didn't show a working phone.

I had the problem with a LG Stylo 3 and its battery was removable so I removed it and tossed it.

I believe the Fiesta has an unremovable battery and so I can't just replace the battery.

It's a real darn shame because I have three Fiestas and they are my workhorses because of their long battery life.

Any opinions or information on this? Thank you.

    Okay this is weird.
This is the first time I had seen this thread.

My LG Fiesta has a very swollen battery.
I'm eventually going to move my account to another Tracfone with a year of service and talk, text and data on it but I just never seem to kick myself enough to get it done.

The battery is so swollen that the case I have on the phone is cracked.
The screen is a bit curved too.

So since you have the same problem with your LG Fiestas too it must be a common defect with this particular model.

    So strange.

Loved the phone when I used it regularly.
My Tracfone account on this phone is still active but I use a different line all the time.

Swollen batteries ime are common with removable batteries. Specially when the phones are over 4 years old.

Never forget that the phone manufacturer and the battery manufacturer are rarely the same company, if at all.
    Just another day in paradise.....
