Congratulations on getting the slick new phone!

Fear not about the mobile data. There is none available on the Legacy PAYGO plan.

Yes, for sure, all new Android phones have a lot of things that need to be updated once they're powered up and on for a while. Depending on whether your wife intends to use the device as a mini web browsing tablet, if/when she does attempt that (with Wi-Fi on), it's a good idea to visit the Google Play Store (or at least open the app) and go to its Settings area and select to not auto-update apps (except for the ones you might use regularly). This is also contingent on having the phone set up with her Google account (Gmail), if she has one.

Then how did it update before we added a network? Where did the 16mB that it used come from?

We are working on eliminating stuff in the background, and maybe the foreground. I have 2 smartphones myself -- one for a US account, one for a Norwegian account -- but my wife prefers a dumbphone. It isn't that she's a Luddite or techphobe: she's a mathematical neurophysiologist, and spends her waking time surrounded by pretty substantial modern tech. However, she likes to compartmentalize. She also has a pretty small handbag. I suspect that as soon as she finds a modern dumbphone she likes, the N200 will go into the classifieds. Really, T-mo could have saved itself some money by making a Nokia flip phone an option for the free upgrade.

People were talking about the Nokia 225 bar phone.

A Nord N200 phone (still T-mobile locked) only worked with a Walmart FP SIM when unlocked.

Wi-Fi Calling preference can be set under (with OxygenOS 12):
    Settings > Mobile network > T-Mobile/phone number box > Wi-Fi Calling > Calling preference
I left it as Cellular preferred.

The phones received OxygenOS 12 update this weekend. Update file size was exactly 3.90 GB.

Temporary unlock status was retained after the update and a factory reset. However, at some point 60+ MB was used from the Walmart FP SIM.

Because I had to update multiple phones, for consistency I documented what I went through after the update, starting with a factory reset.
(I usually factory reset after a major software update.)

This is fairly minimal setup, and I will install/re-enable apps as needed. For example, instead of Chrome, I'd install Firefox, then add the uBlock Origin extension.

I hope this does not become a waste of people's time (because this is based on my personal preference).

    Code:
    Settings
Users & accounts > account > three dots > Remove account
System settings > Back up and reset > Reset phone > Erase all data > Erase data (in red, twice)
    Start > Agree > Agree

Connect to Wi-Fi > enter password > Wi-Fi network name
    - After a factory reset (as well as the OxygenOS 12 update), the phone has a new Wi-Fi MAC address each time.

    Wallpaper after OxygenOS 12 update

    After the update:
    - Home screen had a new OxygenOS 12 wallpaper.
    - Lock screen had the same wallpaper pre-update.
    - Photos were retained, but no wallpapers.
    - Get Current Wallpaper reported "The wallpaper could not be retrieved, please make sure a wallpaper image has been set and try again." (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...rrentwallpaper).

    After a factory reset:
    - Both Home and Lock screens had the new OxygenOS 12 wallpaper.
    - Photos were also gone.
    - Same error from Get Current Wallpaper.

I found OxygenOS 11 wallpapers from:
    - https://www.androidgb.com/oneplus-no...ad-here-10424/

After uploading the standard light blue OxygenOS 11 wallpaper to the N200:
    - I had to Restart the N200 for launcher/Photos to see the uploaded wallpaper.
    - Long press home screen > Wallpapers > Album > select wallpaper >
Wallpaper zoom off (square to the right of Apply) > Apply > Home & Lock screens

However, font color in status bar was dark (which looked wrong) on Home screen,
but was white (which looked correct and was the same as OxygenOS 11) on Lock screen.

Now I cannot go back to the new OxygenOS 12 wallpaper.
Although it might be a bit too colorful/vibrant,
it looked better than the standard light blue OxygenOS 11 wallpaper with the wrong font color.

For now (before someone extracts the new OxygenOS 12 wallpaper), I have gone back to "GalaxyS7-edge-wallpaper-12".
Although it's very old, with the correct font color, it looks better than the OxygenOS 11 wallpaper with the wrong font color.

You can currently buy the Nokia 225 directly from Nokia, unlocked, for $40. We might go that route.

Any unlocked (or T-mobile locked) phone with appropriate bands and VoLTE will probably work after the network change. T-Mobile is being more charitable than AT&T in this regard; AT&T will only allow certain whitelisted phones on their network. (I have one plan through an AT&T MVNO, and this was irritating, I ended up replacing a perfectly good 4G phone with an older iPhone.)

I don't think hitting Exit works even after many times, because the same notification keeps showing up after each restart.

Instead, hit Agree and continue. Then Settings > Connection & sharing > Quick device connect -> Off.

If that still does not work, I will do:
    Code:
Settings > Apps > App management > three dots > Show system > Quick device connect >
     Storage usage > Clear data
     Manage notifications > Off
     Permissions > Location > Don't allow > DON'T ALLOW ANYWAY
                   Nearby devices > Don't allow > DON'T ALLOW ANYWAY

    Also added:
    Code:
    Settings
     About device
Version > keep tapping Build number (seven times) for Developer options to appear.
     System settings
      Developer options (then under DRAWING)
Window animation -> from 1x to off
Transition animation -> from 1x to off
Animator duration -> from 1x to .5x (if off, Power off or Restart go to "Reboot to safe mode")

    Moreover:

    Code:
    Settings
     Home screen & Lock screen
      Double-tap to lock -> On
      Raise to wake -> On
Double-tap to wake or turn off screen -> On (turn off does not work, need Double-tap to lock -> On)
      Lock screen shortcuts > none

    I disabled more apps:

    Google Play Services for AR
    - Google Play Services for AR appears after update.
After Disable, can uninstall either in a) Play Store, or b) its App info (in Settings), three dots.
      After uninstall, becomes ARCore.
    Maps
Visual Voicemail (Uninstall if a phone will be on Mobile Internet)
    - After uninstall, get text message: In order to check your voicemail messages,
you need to download the latest version of the app at t-mo.co/VMMtmobile
    Zen Mode (Uninstall, https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...plus.brickmode)
Cannot find Google Drive (id=com.google.android.apps.docs) in list,
so long press on Drive app > App info, can then Disable.
    One Google app remains: Calendar

"Data saving > On > TURN ON" above turns on Data Saver mode.

Here "background" = operations not seen by user.

To extend battery life, I checked for unnecessary apps under:
Settings > Apps > Auto launch

    Doze mode is under
    Settings > Battery > Advanced settings > Optimize battery use > {Allow optimize, Don't optimize, Always ask}
"Automatically optimize apps that are draining battery in the background"
    Here "background" = screen off.

    https://developer.android.com/traini...e/doze-standby
    https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/androi...ion-harm-good/

    https://developer.android.com/about/...hanges/battery
"Existing versions of Android offer . . .":
    Unrestricted = "Don't optimize" on OxygenOS 12 (I assume/believe)
Optimized (default) = "Always ask" (default)
    Restricted = "Allow optimize"

A blue dot before an app's name appears after the app is updated and before the app is used.
Simply open the app, then the blue dot goes away.

I think after keeping my extra prepaid SIM in an old AT&T Samsung Rugby, I could maybe get the "trade in your phone" text. Unfortunately, nothing has come through and the Rugby's battery died and after recharging it, it will no longer stay connected to T-Mobile 2G for more than a few seconds after starting the phone up. Moving the SIM to other 2G phones also seems to be the case, but it's working fine in a newer, VoLTE device. I wonder if they're starting to enforce some 2G blocking in some markets?

Anyone have any luck getting the OnePlus without the actual text? Still referencing the promo UMTS5GFREEN200. And of course with a 2G/3G phone.
