Not sure if generic T-mo card would work. New plan is likely the Ultra $3/month plan that is available either at some T-mo stores or at the eBay Mint store(a specific Ultra sim card kit). Decent light usage deal with add on packs if you run out during the month.

I do not think it's the Ultra plan (third bullet in the link below), because the Ultra plan has 100MB.

If so, one can change to Connect, Simply Prepaid, or Mobile Internet.
I assume the balance does not expire (and no need to add $1 or $10 a year), but just gets used up by $3 a month?
Some people have talked about getting a SIM card from eBay (instead of paying $10) or from Costco.

Be sure it supports 5G (or just pay the $10 and buy directly from T-Mobile). On the following page there are two versions:

I used the Find store link and it list Costco as a store so I am going to try that first.

If that does not work I also have a T-Mobile store near me.

Some people said Costco sometimes can give a free SIM so that might save $10 if they do that.

I wonder if we also have pay for "assistance fee" ($30!)?

I looked more into the "assistance fee". It seems to be for postpaid and includes a SIM card. For prepaid, a SIM card is specifically listed for $10. It would not make sense to charge us "assistance fee" (which includes a SIM card) and again $10 for another SIM card, so I would argue that "assistance fee" should not apply to us.

The N200 has been as low as $200. Amazon and Best Buy are matching each other.

I just discovered I got the text notification (haven't had the line on for a while - thanks for the heads up, by the way).

I don't think I'll be taking them up on this offer. I like my $10/year Legacy Gold Rewards plan. It's there when I need it, and isn't being siphoned off at $3/month with no usage.

Plus I want a phone that won't upgrade its Android beyond version 8 or 9, so I can keep using a particularly obscure app I like. I will get a different phone that has LTE band 71 and uses VoLTE; no problem there. Not concerned about 5G.

Right now, in turning on my T-Mobile phone to check for this text message, I flipped on data, and sure enough, my nearest T-Mo tower is still serving up Edge!

My sister just brought over another Nokia 1208 that had not been turned on for over two years (but I kept adding $10 each July).

I turned it on, and NO text.

I will leave it on for a while, but maybe we will be forced to keep at least one Legacy Pay As You Go plan after all.
(It's probably not relevant, but this line was moved to the new platform on 9/12/21. The three other lines that got the text on 4/1/22 were all moved to the new platform on 8/26/21, and were all turned on at least in December when I paid $1 each.)

I had always added $10 to my Legacy Gold Rewards line until an hour ago.

I just added a dollar to my account and it added a year to the plan and a dollar to my balance.

Definitely nicer than adding $10 every year that just keeps building up.

I'd love to have been offered the opportunity to get the new phone and possibly change my plan to the $3 a month plan but I have my SIM in a Doro 7050 which is 4G LTE.

On the thread below they are talking about if your old phone has the larger SIM.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/tmobile/com...phone/i3bbl6d/

My old phone has the larger SIM so I can't just transfer it from the old phone to the new phone.

I don't care about keeping my old legacy plan so it is OK to switch me to the $3 plan; however, how do they do this?

Do you just give them your old phone with the SIM inside and do they setup the new phone so it is working in front of you in the store or do they just give you the new phone and you setup the new phone yourself at home?

They're still offering the $3/month T-Mobile plan (30 units, 10˘ for each extra minute or text) as either an auto-conversion for a prepaid line with a balance that can't cover a normal plan after 120 days or if you call and ask for the grandfathered $3 PayGo plan. I'd guess that they'll convert people to their own in-house plan—keeping the balances in T-Mobile's hands (might get messy to transfer a balance to another company) and not getting into awkward SIM locking situations either.

When I used the store finder link it shows Costco as a T-Mobile store.

I think the Costco phone kiosk is not exactly the same as Costco but they have a deal with Costco.

I called the Costco T-Mobile kiosk today and they said they don't sell the oneplus phones so I have to go to a normal T-Mobile store to get the free phone.

I wonder if this free 5G phone deal is legitimate.

In one post on another website they said the T-Mobile store knew nothing about it.

It could be that the government is forcing T-Mobile to give free phones out as part of the merger deal and they don't really plan on giving out the free phones. They make the offer but none of the stores have any of the phones so T-Mobile says to the government no one wanted the free phones.

The reason I am suspicious is because they are not making a lot of money off of my plan so it seems unlikely they want to give me a free phone to keep me as a customer.

I could see where they might want to keep a customer if they were paying $70 or more a month for postpaid but why would they want to keep a customer that is paying $10 a year on prepaid.

It's legitimate, but seems that some stores haven't been properly educated (which tends to happen with in-house prepaid on all the carriers):

    https://prepaid.t-mobile.com/free-5g...trade-in-offer

The Reddit post on this tends to cover a bit more and has some examples of people actually getting it.

It's not unheard of for carriers to unload some inventory on prepaid as an "upgrade" and as a way to keep people around—AT&T did this with some GoPhone SpareOne lines during their 2G shutdown - sent a LG B470 practically unsolicited as a replacement.

The big question is if it's targeted or anyone with prepaid and a 2G/3G phone can walk in and do the swap. My suspicion is that a line has to be targeted.

It's a legit offer. My dad had an over 10 year old prepaid t-mobile phone he uses as a backup line which got the text about the 3g shutdown and the offer to get a Nord N200 phone.

He just went to a T-Mobile store and they swapped his phone to a Nord N200 free of charge. He was also able to keep his old legacy pay as go you plan.

Sounds like you need to be using a T-Mobile branded 3G phone to get this offer.
Also looks like it is by invitation only.

I guess I will call first just to check if they have the free phone in stock and then go to the T-Mobile store.

I don't care if they give me the $3 plan or not but that is unusual he kept his old plan because everyone is saying they switch you to the $3 plan.
