Secret $20/month Tablet UDP with 10 GB Hotspot

I know this has already been discussed on the AT&T subreddit, but for the unaware, AT&T has a secret postpaid standalone $20/month tablet unlimited data plan that comes with 10 GB full-speed hotspot (then 128 Kbps), 5G access, and free roaming in Canada and Mexico. By “secret” I mean that AT&T doesn’t advertise it or even have it on their website, but I was able to sign up for the plan yesterday by simply going into an AT&T store and asking for it, even though I didn’t have an AT&T postpaid account and therefore had to have one created just for this plan.

The only catch is that it’s always deprioritized, but as others have mentioned, deprioritized AT&T data is generally of a quality similar to prioritized AT&T data (unlike on Verizon, where it can spell doom). Despite it saying it only comes with standard definition video, I was able to enable any video resolution by disabling Stream Saver. (Given that I get ~100 Mbps at home over AT&T LTE, I feel comfortable describing this plan as supporting 4K streaming.)

I hear (but have not confirmed) that this plan can be used for unlimited hotspotting by overwriting a hotspot’s IMEI with that of a cellular tablet, which can be done using apps like this. Of course this is a violation of the ToS, but if you don’t go wild with it, you would probably be fine.

I’ve heard mixed reports on whether this $20 plan comes with any prioritized data if it’s added to an account subscribed to a premium unlimited plan such as Unlimited Elite. It definitely did prior to September, but no idea now. Even if it doesn’t, this is a very good deal imo.

T-Mobile’s plan is better and more versatile,

Unless I’m missing something, T-Mobile doesn’t offer a standalone unlimited tablet data plan. Just an add-on to a phone plan.

Is this a better price/plan than the ATT connected car plan? My dad has a Volvo that can take an ATT sim. So far he's only tried the free trial.

I don’t think so. The connected car plan comes with 22 GB of prioritized data for the same price.

I've checked on and off through the years when I would have liked something unlimited for less than $34.99/month.
iPhone 12 Pro is my current phone I carry.

I use the AT&T plan in a Samsung tablet with EasyTether and WireGuard running on a Raspberry PI.

The Connected Car plan can only be used in a car. The tablet can be used anywhere. The Connected Car plan is all hotspot data. The tablet plan is limited to 10 GB/mo. of hotspot without hackery.

I have the old Connected Car plan that can be used without a car. It's sweeeeeeet.

Does anyone know if there are contracts involved with this plan? Are you required to stay on for XX months?

No contracts, but you get charged an activation fee every time you initiate service so there’s a de facto penalty for canceling and then later reactivating service. It isn’t worth it unless you’ll go more than two months without resubscribing.

No it's not. The plans are the same cost. And you can use a Mobley plan in pretty much any device. AT&T has been very lenient with it. I've used my Mobley sim card in a 5G Nighthawk. Of course 5G-E is all I can get. But better than nothing.

The Connected Car plan that you can get now only works in a car. It requires communications with the car network to prove it is in a car.

You are correct that the old CCU Mobley plan will work outside of a car with a power adapter for the OBD device or with the SIM in another hotspot device. I have had mine in a Velocity hotspot for years. The Mobley OBD device is only connected to power. It does not communicate with the car at all. They have not sold the Mobley plan or device in several years.

Since this is data only, is this plan free of sales tax similar to wireline Internet service or nah? I'm interested if there aren't another 5 lines of fees tacked on
