I just bought the AT&T 6962C Turbo Prepaid Hotspot from Walmart ($49) to use occasionally with the 100gb/$55 plan. How do prepaid hotspot plans work if you don't use them all year - just a month here, a month there? Does ATT deactivate the SIM and you have to get a new SIM? What is the time limit of non-use?

I used chat with ATT and they said after 59 days I'd need a new SIM, but someone else said it would still reactivate for up to a year without use...not sure what is true.

I bought the AT&T 100 GB for $55 for my Pepwave on May 28th. I only used it for a few days for some testing. I wanted to know if it worked for future use. The month was up on June 28th so I assume it stopped working then. When I login to the account it said "Balance expires on Aug 28th". Now it says "Expired on Aug 28th". The "balance expired" words are kind of meaningless for this plan but I had also heard of the 59 day rule so I was expecting the SIM to be useless after that date but it's still prompting me to pay another $55. I don't think the SIM is dead. It certainly looks like it would come back to life if I paid $55 now so maybe the one year thing is true.

In case you didn't know, to get online access to the account go here and use the forgot password link. It will send a SMS text to the phone number of the device. My router doesn't receive texts for some reason even though it is supposed to so I had to put the SIM temporarily in a phone to receive the text. https://www.paygonline.com/websc/loginPage.html

Any issues with getting the Pepwave "approved" at the AT&T store when you first signed up for the plan? I haven't come across an officially approved BYOD list for AT&T that includes routers.

Wonder if it would work to sign up for the plan with an unlocked Netgear AC797S hotspot for example, and then swap the SIM to my Netgear LB1120 router?

No, the guy at the store only wanted to see the IMEI so I showed him a screenshot of the admin page. He didn't know or care what a Pepwave is. I was out in ten minutes with a SIM.

I don't think you need to go to a store now because you can sign up here https://www.att.com/prepaid/activations/#/activate.html with your own SIM. When I first tried that it didn't accept my Pepwave's IMEI. That's why I went to the store. Now if I try it, the same and similar IMEIs are accepted so I think it accepts a bigger range than when I first tried it. I haven't gone all the way with it but it takes me to the next step where I choose the plan. When I first tried it I immediately got a "We don't recognize that IMEI" error or some such words.

Thank you! That will make it a _lot_ easier for me since the nearest AT&T corporate store is over an hour's drive from the house..

Is there a way to check if an IMEI is accepted before purchasing a SIM? It looks like the activation page requires both the SIM and the IMEI to check. I would like to switch my MOFI4500 over to AT&T after running into issues with Verizon not giving me the expected 50% discount on the hotspot plan despite indicating my IMEI is valid on their BYOD page, but I'd like to avoid paying for a SIM only to find I'm out of luck. Switching to a Pepwave product is an option however, so perhaps I shouldn't worry about it...

Yes, I purchased it directly from Mofi. In case it matters, it’s the MOFI4500-4GXeLTE-SIM8-COMBO V3 version of the 4500, so it should support the necessary bands to work with AT&T.

I setup the AT&T 12 month 20GB prepaid mobile hotspot plan on my MOFI4500 today without any issues (other than a snafu on AT&T's website). I went to a local AT&T store this morning to get a SIM card; I was expecting to pay $5 for it, but there was no charge.

Even though the 100GB plan is a better deal, I really don't need 100GB per month for my use, so I decided to save some money. I can't test them back to back as my Verizon SIM is now deactivated, but I seem to be getting a faster connection with AT&T at a few spots in town (I ran a speed test at home and then when I was out running a few errands this afternoon) than I did with Verizon, so that's a nice bonus.

The snafu on AT&T's site was that I got all the way through to the summary page where it said I had the 12 month plan, but charged my credit card $35 instead of $300. When I logged in and checked my account, I was on the 15GB per month plan. It took a while on the phone getting bounced around to different people, but I was able to get it straightened out (assuming the $35 refud shows up on my credit card in a few days).

I went to an ATT store in chinatown / nw dc, to get this plan..

I'm more of a minimalist these days and didn't want to shell out for an extra hardware device when my pixel 5 could do as well..

I'm currently on google fi's flexible plan never went / going over $30 since having it..
MY plan was to get this plan in the pixel 5 & use it for usb tethering to a gl.inet slate router when need be, my laptop's dns over tls local dns server I believe is way too data intensive / heavy for tethering to fi's hotspot, worse should I use vpn or tor, (i'm on wifi at home & about in dc).

Went to the ATT store asked about the plan, the cs rep explained that once i pay for that plan there's no refund, which i replied "that's why I'm here in the store, to make sure all's fine before even paying"..

we went to a store tablet, & he pulled out a white ATT sim card from his back pocket..

all done with the imei check passing & my info correct, there was a line in bold red with an x reading "feature aegb is duplicate with feature nout" .. he and I had no idea what that meant, but we both concluded that ATT wanted these plans for hotspot routers only, not for mobiles..

before hand I tried to order one from the cricket website but it just stalled when trying to finalize the purchase..

really wanted this plan, but didn't want to risk it not working once getting it..

Even went to a tmobile store in adams morgan to grab their $50 / 50gb beforehand, they even told me that that plan wasn't compatible with mobiles, only hotspots..

I mean, for what you're trying to do.. you're just better off grabbing and using a Visible SIM.. $25/mo unlimited talk/text/data/5mbps hotspot.

Even as a 2nd line, that's likely going to do you better than one of these hotspot only plans, and on Verizon... Visible has access to C-Band and mmWave as well unlike their own "branded" basic/prepaid plans (since Visible is owned by verizon anyway)

I mean worst case you can try it and see what happens, It works fine for me on my Fold 3 and iPhone 13, and Visible sells the Pixel 6 on their site.. so you should be fine.

    just checked visible's site -

    "You've got options.

Your current phone doesn’t work with us, but you can still get Visible service.

    1

Swap your phone for an eligible compatible phone for free with a number transfer.

    2

You can check out our store to find the latest and greates, and budget friendly phones."

i think i ran into this before which made them a no go for me..

i may have to do what i didn't want to do, sign up for asecond line tmobile or att full monty voice text data plan, when all i want to utilize is simply the data.. that would work maybe.. but would be overkill for the redundant voice / text, that won't be used..

or stick with tethering on fi, & eat the $80 bones for 15gb should i use that much.. or be very careful to hit some pages then quit while tethering..
