IRS SMS messages are not received

    Yes, that INFERNAL Revenue Service.

Signing up for an account, cell phone is required. They send a text message; I don't get it. I tried 4 times over 2 days. They are plain that virtual numbers (Google Voice is an example they give) will not work; I understand. But why won't T-Mobile work? What do I need to do to correct this issue?

OOPS, away from computer for a while ... Postpaid, Magenta 55, for about 2 years. I did port in after several years with prepaid carriers, Verizon MVNOs after maybe 10 years with Alltel who was purchased by Verizon.

My number has been the same throughout all of this.

    So, FWIW, and as I recall;
    ~1999, Alltel post
    ~2005, Verizon post
    ~2013, PagePlus pre
    ~2016, (Forgot name) pre
    ~2019, T-Mo post

I do see on SlashDot today,

"The Number Registry has announced that wireless carriers will no longer be supporting SMS or MMS text enabling on their respective wireless numbers," the March 25 announcement from Aerialink, reads. The announcement adds that the change is "industry-wide" and "affects all SMS providers in the mobile ecosystem." "Be aware that Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T have reclaimed overwritten text-enabled wireless numbers industry-wide. As a result, any Verizon, T-Mobile or AT&T wireless numbers which had been text-enabled as BYON no longer route messaging traffic through the Aerialink Gateway."

I wonder what that means, particularly as regards this issue I'm having.

Not sure that would be the cause of your problem or not, but I did notice last week that my father's phone on Project Fi could not receive text messages from the IRS. I ended up using my phone on T-Mobile to get the messages for him.

Thanks @TenFour. It doesn't look like the "text enabled" issue applies to my problem; I sent a test text from my GV number to my T-Mo phone minutes after the IRS failed 3 times to be sure messages were getting through; it worked.

I have heard that Project Fi has the same issue as Google Voice; it seems to be considered a virtual number.

    Please clarify?

. . . wireless carriers will no longer be supporting SMS or MMS text enabling . . .
I don't have a problem with the IRS or anything, but I do use Google Fi. I am puzzled by the whole jargon here, with the present participles "supporting" and "enabling" used together in this way. What is forbidden? I understand in a vague way that some phones are going to have trouble with some texts.

The IRS has always said that you should ignore messages, emails and phone calls purporting to be from the IRS. Their primary means of contact is by the US Postal Service.

Yes, BUT; when signing up for an IRS account, they require sending an SMS to complete; an unworking (for me) alternate, postal mail with code doesn't work either. The mail came, but procedure didn't work.

My respect for our government working falls more every day.

Receive an activation code by mail

You can register for online services without a mobile phone:

    - Follow the steps to register for an online services account.
    - In the step for mobile phone verification, select 'Receive an activation code by postal mail.'
    - Allow 10 business days for the code to arrive by mail. The code is valid for 30 days.
    - Follow the instructions included with the code to complete registration
This one-time code will allow you to create your account. You can then:

Download the IRS2Go mobile app to generate the security code needed each time you log in to your account. IRS2Go is free and available for Android devices, iPhones, iPads and Amazon Fire tablets; or
Receive a security code via phone call to any U.S.-based phone number each time you log in

Security code via text message or phone call

Each time you log in, we send a security code via text message or phone call. Text messages from IRS Password Service originate from “77958” and message and data rates may apply. Phone calls originate from “202-318-5542.”

    - When you receive the code, enter it quickly and accurately.
    - The code is only valid for 10 minutes. You can request a new code from the login screen. Note: you are limited to just a few attempts before you are locked out for 24 hours.

-If you didn’t receive the text with the security code:
    - You may have opted out of receiving messages from IRS password service. Text IN to “77958” to resume service and receive the security code.
    - Your provider may be experiencing technical issues. Request a code via phone call from the login screen or try again later.
Note: Our call center can’t troubleshoot text message delivery issues. If you can't get a text message right now, you can get a security code via phone call.
