    Verizon to buy Tracfone

Marketwatch reporting Verizon to buy Tracfone from America Movil. Film at 11.

There will be a million questions, and zero answers for about a year. Don't rush to panic.

WOW. Very interesting. Curious to see if they keep things the same, or work to increase ARPU - and get rid of T-Mobile and AT&T as network providers. I've had TracFone since the late 90's and as annoying as the America Movil brand is, it feels like the end of an era in a sad way. It's been an extra line for most of my time with them but I hope they keep the low cost options. Time will tell.
Castrol EDGE 0W-20 is my drug of choice.

Primary: iPhone 12 eSIM; Galaxy Note 9
Secondary: TracFones: iPhone SE 2nd gen dual-SIM [AT&T] & iPhone XS [Verizon]; Cricket: iPhone 8 Plus
Mobile Broadband: ZTE Z917 LTE hotspot (5GB for $10)

    Actually makes sense

Both T-Mobile and AT&T have substantial "value customer" percentages in their Metro and Cricket service offerings. Verizon's pre-paid lineup has been lackluster at best in comparison. By bringing the Tracfone brands onboard they gain significant prepaid market share much more quickly than they could expand their existing prepaid line, they protect the pricing points of their own "Verizon" offerings, and now have the direct revenue from those services that were already a significant participant on their network. In short, Tracfone's profits now get added to Verizon's balance sheet.
Time will tell how long before the inevitable price increases from a captive market segment start to kick in. After all, their new customers won't be able to cancel and go someplace cheaper if the consolidated Big 3 market makes that no longer an option.

I agree. I think the days of $50-$60 new phone bundled with one year of service and 1500 in each bucket are numbered. Visible Wireless is prepaid Verizon service and it's $25/month. I wonder if they'll honor my backup phone's service expiring in 2039

I'm going to have to start activating the Tracfone bundles that I have in the drawer and merge the service sooner than later.

I'm definitely not pleased with the thought of Verizon running the show.

Interesting. I did not see that coming.

Verizon, already #1 in subscriber count, adding 21 million TF subscribers will make it difficult for T-Mo to claim that they are #1 for a long time.

I have the same thoughts with my 2030 phone service and thous of minutes! ... and several bundle cards not activated yet.

I think this is the end of a not so perfect, but good thing...

I wonder if the fact that most recent TF phones and deals were slanted toward Verizon was part of TF's strategy to make it more attractive to Verizon.

I wonder if the DOJ will even let this through. Clear to see long term, this is an attempt to buy ~10 million prepaid customers off of the AT&T and T-Mobile network and onto theirs (you know they'll be moving everyone to Verizon sooner rather than later.)

I can't see anything good come of this, Verizon will start meddling with everything.

Wow, using a Tracfone that was on the AT&T network has been important to me. This could be a major change.

    Correct. Especially for prepaid consumers.
    Say good bye to:
    - Having choice of access to all the three major networks
    - Having moderately cheap plans
    - To Pay as you go data, texts and minutes
    - To all those cheap bundles you find online.

Tracfone is far from perfect. We complain here about many things about TF and rightfully. But this is a brand that was made to make cellular service cheap, affordable, where people will only pay for what they really need, nothing more. That made it the biggest prepaid cellular provider in the western hemisphere.

What the hell is Carlos thinking?

I wish this deal doesn't go through but I don't keep my hopes up.

Maybe VZ bought a lemon after all... who knows if the cell phone business won't go the same route as the land line phone within 5 years or so !
