Red face Does this mean my phone is locked to AT&T?

My son sold me his LG V20 since it will be an upgrade for me. He thinks he was with Cricket when he used it, but isn't sure. The AT&T logo displays when I power up.

Just to see what would happen I put my Red Pocket red (VZW) SIM card in it and here's what I find.

I get a signal power icon showing 4 bars so it's detecting a VZW tower. Under settings it shows my phone number.

    In network settings I see:

    Name: IMG_20200611_201819813.jpg
Views: 92
Size: 31.8 KB

I try to connect to the Verizon network:

Size: 39.5 KB

But I don't connect, and after I reboot I see:

    Name: IMG_20200611_202856241.jpg
Views: 83
Size: 40.1 KB

All of which suggests to me that it's locked to the AT&T network. Am I correct?

Did you verify the apn settings are correct for Verizon?

You need to be able to edit the apn settings and make the apn vzwinternet at the very least.

Also dial *#*#4636#*#* and see if brings up a menu that you can make the preferred network type lte/cdma or lte(it might be set to Global)

If a phone is SIM locked to a particular network or MVNO, it usually displays a message like “SIM not supported”, or something similar.

Thanks to all for your prompt replies. This is why I am a member of HoFo.

October262, my son did not have it unlocked. I thought maybe he purchased it network unlocked to use on any network but apparently not.

Boz, I don't get any SIM messages. In fact, since my number appears in settings, the phone must recognize my SIM card.

ShedFred, when I look at the APN settings I see :

Size: 25.2 KB

I tap the vertical ellipsis in attempt to change and the only option I have is:

    Name: IMG_20200612_092528425.jpg

Size: 27.2 KB

I didn't dial *#*#4636#*#* but I'll do that next time I put my SIM card in the V20. I have to use my phone right now so I'll wait until this evening.

Thanks again to all who have responded.

    The V20 has a different variant for each provider, which locks out competitor bands. The AT&T version has no B13 (Verizon's primary LTE band) or CDMA (not used after this year). Best I can tell the AT&T variant has LTE 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 / 7 / 12 / 20 / 29 / 30 / 66.

You would be best off switching to GSMA with that phone.

Not being able to edit or add an apn is going to be your biggest challenge.

Can you edit your apn with the AT&T sim installed.

When inserting a non-AT&T based SIM in a locked AT&T phone I would expect a dialog to enter the unlock code digits. I have done this several times on a LG Phoenix 2 and couple of ZTE phones that were from AT&T Prepaid. They used to give the unlock codes freely if the phone had not been activated on AT&T Prepaid. You could try the AT&T unlock portal to see what you get.

Anyway, no unlock dialog with a Verizon SIM implies to me that the phone is not carrier locked. Did you insert the Vz SIM with the power off? Powering on the phone with the "foreign" SIM might make a difference in what happens for the unlock dialog.

When touching the vertical ellipsis on the APN page on mine I also get an option to Add APN. Without being able to change the APN you won't get much.

As someone said, the phone may be a customized AT&T variant that would lack the LTE bands to work weil, if at all, with Verizon. Band 13 is critical. It might work fine on an AT&T MVNO. What is the exact model number of the phone from Settings?

Check unlock status here - https://www.cellunlocker.net/iPhone-Network-Lock-Check

Then unlock here. This is AT&T’s unlock portal.

Thanks again to all who have replied. I indeed submitted an unlock request at the AT&T unlock portal. No reply yet. I have been debating switching to H2O paygo since I use so few voice minutes. So now is my opportunity. I put my Red Pocket red SIM card in out of curiosity, and now I know.

As long as I can use it with an AT&T MVNO such as H2O I'll be happy. I'm connected to wifi all day every day, so I don't even use a fraction of the 500MB that I get with my current Red Pocket plan.

I don't think the phone is locked. If it were you would be prompted for an unlock code and would have no connectivity at all (other than 911).
