When is Tmobile 3g shutting down?

My father uses a 3g flip phone on the Net10 10cent plan using Tmobile. All he cares about is phone calls.

    If anyone knows.

According to the links below, it isn't announced yet.

    T-Mobile 2G/3G Sunset Schedule:
12/31/2020: 2G network sunset. No guarantee of service beyond this date
3G network: No announcement of network sunset

I thought I had seen a date, but checking again, it doesn't appear that T-Mo has announced a 3G sunset date. 2G sunset is supposed to be the end of 2020.

The 3G sunset delay appears to be driven by IoT and M2M subscribers using it with devices that are not cheap or easy to replace, like trucks, alarm systems, and a bunch of stuff we don't see or think about. Apparently that is something like 43 million lines including our phones.

I saw speculation of 2022 for the 3G sunset.

That said, in the mean time, 3G coverage is degrading, not improving. It's time to start thinking about a new phone that won't unexpectedly stop working. There are still a few flip phones.

Ok thanks, 3g should be good for awhile. I thought 2g was already dead.

T-Mo is still using some 2G - Unknown on how many cells. AT&T shut down their 2G a while ago.

It won't be "good". It will be probably marginally working in most of the places.
So if you want to have a reliable service, an upgrade to a 4G flip phone is not that expensive.
This one has support even for their new 600MHz bands:

$100 (full price) for a flip-phone. I'd call that expensive.

On the plus side, it does have a 2.6 / 5 review rating!

The TMO Go Flip 3 is more expensive than a Tracfone MyFlip, but has better features. The AT&T SMARTFLIP also has these features, and is a lot cheaper then the TMO model. For a talk only phone the MyFlip is fine.

Late model T-Mobile branded phones have B71 (600MHz) capability which could be important for calling on VoLTE because of better range. Not available everywhere yet until the last UHF TV stations are cleared off. B-71 is not common on non-TMO branded phones.

I have a T-Mo Legacy PAYGO line, and use a first gen Moto E from Cricket that I applied an unlock to in order to use with T-Mo.

The phone will do T-Mo 3G and HSPA+, but in my small hometown and many nearby areas there is still 2G/Edge service, so even though I've been debating on whether to make a move soon to an LTE capable device (like an LG Aristo 2 Plus), at least here there doesn't seem to be too much need in the short term. Of course I'll need to keep aware of any sunsetting schedule.

This is used as a back up line, and to keep the line and number active. I've had it almost 15 years and have about $100 built up as a balance, so I don't want to just chuck it.

I'd buy a Kyocera DURA XV which supports VoLTE and put a Verizon based BYOD SIM in it...

Should get 10 years out of it easy.

Current TF-branded TF/Verizon flip-phones support VoLTE too, and a lot cheaper.

Their bigger and don't fit in the pocket as good. I've been trying to get my father one of those and get him on Pageplus. I have the zte flip 4g on Pageplus as a glove box phone and he said it was big.

He won't do it because he has to many minutes saved. Even though I told him it's cheaper than $30 every 60 days. Even losing his minutes because the payout is more.

All those minutes are useless having to pay $30 every 60 days vs $25 every 120 days. Plus he can be on Verizon. He's old and set in his ways and won't change. His phone works well at his house so he doesn't care about Verizon even though it works 10x better in his area.

What phone does your father have now? Technology changes sometimes make people upset, and phone size is one of them. I remember the howling from Tracfone users when AT&T shut off 2G a few years back, and their beloved basic phones would not work anymore.
