Straight Talk Home Phone ZTE Z723EL Device Issues?

Okay, here I am with a question for anyone else using the Straight Talk ZTE Z723EL home phone box. Are you having issues with tones on the line when someone calls you?

I bought my ZTE home phone box several months ago to replace the Huawei box which will soon be obsolete. So now Straight Talk only offers the ZTE Z723EL unit through their website. At the time, they offered a refurbished unit and a new unit. Both are exactly the same. My Huawei was also a refurb and worked perfectly so I figured the ZTE would probably be just as good. I purchased the refurbished ZTE unit from Straight Talk.

About a month after connecting it and transferring my number, on occasion, whenever someone would call and I would pick up the phone, a set of three tones would emit on the line with the caller. They could hear them and I could hear them. To make it stop, I would have to hang up and call them back. Then another call would come in and the same tones were emitting again along with the caller on the line. Usually three tones, the same kind as if you dialed a wrong number.

Straight Talk was of NO help (imagine that). So I did some research and learned that there are firmware issues with the ZTE Z723EL. The glitch was discovered when AT&T was using the same box. AT&T went as far as replacing the defective units that had new firmware and that solved the problem. Consumer Cellular also uses the same ZTE units. So I contacted ZTE directly. Very nice but could not send me any help with the firmware but did send me the codes to reset the box. I did just that and it worked tone free for about a couple of weeks.

Then this week, a family member called me and when I answered, I got him and a dial tone (that was a new one). I had to hang up and call him back. Next call was the three tones along with the caller. So in other words, the box reset was a temporary fix and now it is just as bad as it was before.

By the way, it does NOT happen on outgoing calls. Only incoming calls.

I have been on the phone with Straight Talk for two days. No help at all. They said even if I ordered a brand new box, it is a ZTE (same model) and may have the same issues as the box I already have. I figure all these refurbished units are probably the ones with the original firmware problems and Straight Talk probably paid little for them, cleaned them up, then sent them out. But the brand new ZTE units on the website are the same. I don't want to waste $50 and after the return policy expires be stuck with a defective unit.

So I guess I'm wanting to find out of anyone else using the Straight Talk ZTE home phone units are having the same problems with odd tones on incoming calls? Anyone got any ideas on how to fix it? I'm required to have a home phone and I do not want to go VOIP and would like to stay with Straight Talk. But this is getting monotonous. But OOMA is also offering a home phone unit through the Sprint network so I may be forced to switch if I can't find a fix.

    Anybody have an ideas?

Have you checked your voicemail? Some carriers play a tone when there’s a voicemail when making or getting a call. Not sure if it’s in that case but worth to check.

Maybe try another phone directly connected to it?

The voicemail isn't activated as I'm using the house answering machine. And I did connect two difference phones connected to it and called myself and the tones still emitted during the call.

    Appreciate the suggestions though.

What happens when you call the voicemail number? Sometimes there auto setup with generic greetings. If you call your voicemail number and it asks for a password then it’s somehow setup.

Things get through. And one can even leave you a voicemail on the carrier voicemail without ringing your phone.

But the tones only real explanation I could thing of is voicemail, call waiting, or some kind of feature added.

Weird did some research and looks like some sort of ZTE issue on AT&Ts service but that was back 5 years ago. Surely that can’t still be a problem

I have one of the refurb units that I bought about six months ago. I rarely get incoming calls on it. I just tried one incoming call to test. There were no tones.

I had that issue one time with my new ST Z723EL unit. Someone called me from the next town over and I got a weird sound like the one you described. I could still hear them though and said I'd call them back and there was no further problems. I've got calls from other areas and out of state etc... and never had the issue. I just thought it was a fluke because it happened that one time and never reoccurred again.
