    Wifi Calling

For wifi calling to work in a smartphone, do you always need BOTH a smartphone capable of wifi calling AND a SIM card for a cellular service provider that permits wifi calling? Or, is there still way more to it than that?

In general terms that is correct for carrier Wifi calling. Wifi calling is frequently not supported/allowed on prepaid and MVNO plans.

There are several third party, non-carrier, VOIP/Wifi calling apps. Some are free for the app and no cost to use. Google Voice is an example. Non-carrier Wifi calling can't use your carrier number. You have to use the number provided by the non-carrier service.

Both phone and cellular provider have to support it.

Also the phone firmware (not just the hardware) needs to support it for your carrier. Quite a few phones in the past supported Wifi calling for their native carriers and even when unlocked didn't support it for other carriers.

Thank you for that additional information. Sometimes I think I know a little bit about smartphones, but then I realize I have a LOT to learn. If anybody here can point me to other websites, books, etc. to learn more about smartphones, I would love to hear it.
