online account with carriers, really necessary or not?

Is an online account with a cellular service carrier, whether major carrier or smaller carrier or virtual network operator, really necessary, or useful, or not? Does registering for one make anything easier or better?

It depends. Some MVNOs pretty much require you deal with them via the web. Some carriers and MVNOs are Luddite-friendly and can do everything by phone or in the store. I think if you look at, say, ConsumerCellular. They market to older folks who may not be web-savvy and probably don't require online accounts.

Thanks for some input. I discussed this with one of the cellular service carriers and for being one of THEIR customers, the customer does not need to register for an online account. The telephone line with them is itself one account, and the online-registered account is another but different kind of account. For this company, it is the customer's choice to get an online account or not to.
