Lightning thumb drives for iOS devices?

Does anyone have experience using the combination Lightning & USB flash drives for iOS devices (iPhone, iPad)? They are used for storing photos and videos but seem dependent on apps you have to install for the specific brand of drive. If the drive is good but the app is trash, the combination will be trash. Trying to avoid buying a bad combo.

P.S. I've been informed that new iOS 13 devices (e.g. iPad 7th Gen) have the ability to copy files directly to an external device, without the need to load 3rd party apps. Some have said that it only works with an Apple branded adapter. I don't know.
