No need for number, Data/Promo only

I have long considered decoupling from a phone number, and going all data and using google voice for my calls and I usually use apps to communicate anyway. On eBay they often have promos for the first month for super cheap like a couple gigs for 10-15 with unlimited calls and texts. Are they know to ban by IMEI? I think they have a limit for phone numbers sometimes to prevent abuse. Anyone do something like this before, and is it common?

I would buy Lyca SIMs with 5gb for $10 and just activate a new one each month. I just forward my GV number to the new assigned number. Now the prices for the SIMs are going up.

They don't really ban by IMEI as far as I know. Search Ebay for "Preloaded SIM" or "Prefunded SIM".

The sellers take a loss on the SIM because they get a bonus if you stay with the prepaid service for a certain amount of time.

Depending on how much data you need, T-Mobile offers a prepaid data plan with 2GB of high speed data/month for $10/month. After the 2GB is used, data slowed to 128kbps, which is still quite usable for Google Voice, in my experience.

I'm sure you can find better deals chasing the pre-loaded SIMs on eBay, but this is a decent fallback option and requires less work than trolling eBay for deals periodically.

Another benefit to T-Mo's plan is that streaming from most music services doesn't count against your high speed data. The list of included services is here:
    http://www.t-mobile.com/offer/free-music-streaming.html

...but that link doesn't seem to work on mobile browsers; it just redirects back to T-Mobile.com. So for those reading this on a phone, the current list is pasted below:

Some sellers have a limit on how many you can buy. That's why I use more than one ebay account sometimes.
