“The Internet wasn’t meant to be metered in bits and bytes, so it’s insane that wireless companies are still making you buy it this way. The rate plan is dead — it’s a fossil from a time when wireless was metered by every call or text.” John Legere 1/5/2017

Yep, AT&T has too many irons in the fire. Everyone would have appreciated if they would have kept building out their Network instead of going into the Media and Entertainment Business.

They still have a great network, but it’s falling behind.
It’s a bit like the first iPhone. AT&T would not add data capacity for 2G/3G until they were overloaded with demand and the network was crumbling.
Once the they realize they are in trouble, they will upgrade the network like crazy.

AT&T as usual, has corporate ADD..

NOW, as someone who uses Dual SIM with both AT&T and Verizon - I'm usually using data on my AT&T line as Verizon 9 out of 10 times will be slower or just plain congested.

AT&T has gotten really good on the wireless side since the FirstNet expansion
Left: Verizon Unlimited LTE, Right: WideOpenWest 500/50

Yup, very true. They haven't finished a network upgrade in at least 15 years. They were rushing to get towers onto 3G/4G when they shut down 2G, even though most of the network was actually 4G LTE.

Their spectrum position has allowed them to not have to invest the same level of capital in their network that Verizon has, but if they want to do 5G in a big way, they are going to have to densify eventually. They also need to keep building out coverage. At least the full banding upgrades that they are doing when they do FirstNet are great for capacity in a lot of exurban and rural areas.
