Today in 20m I activated the Google Pixel 3axl on Tracfone, ported my old phone number and minutes to it. Easy, easy. Google Fi needs work.

Where did you port your phone # into TF from? I thought it was already on TF.

It was, they just moved service to a new device.

TF was the one not releasing the number.
Google can only ask for it with the information you give them. They can't force the release (a good thing actually).

You had the option to contact TF and tell them to release your number.

That's exactly what Google Fi advised, as did you and I.

OK, this AM I had this message from Google Fi, "I've reached out to our porting department regarding your number transfer. They advised us that you will need to request a manual response to the transfer from the previous carrier.
