How To Use Free International Text and Data?

On the free 1 year plan. Native Sprint phone. Phone is currently overseas. The phone did receive a text saying you have free text and data in this country.

The phone can receive calls from the US and make calls to the US.

But data and texting, both sending and receiving, don't work. There are no error messages regarding texting. Tried updating PRL but phone said unable to update.

    Help please

Where is the phone being used ? What make/model phone is being used ? Is data roaming turned on ? Has data/text worked at any time during the trip ? Did you contact Sprint customer support prior to the trip to let them know the phone while be traveling internationally ? Does the phone support LTE ? If the phone is CDMA only, your data and text may not work at all.

Need more information to offer any other assistance.

I'm actually asking this question for a friend and don't have all the info.

They used this phone on Sprint in the US. Data never worked overseas. They got the welcome text from Sprint, no other texts work. Phone is LTE. They're in Asia, not sure exactly where.

I think free international text and data is enabled by default for the free 1 year plan so they shouldn't have to contact Sprint anyways

Make sure data roaming is turned on. Sometimes resetting network settings can help but contact sprint before doing that

But why do you need data roaming for texting?

You don't. Maybe manually choose a different network

If the phone is an iPhone it needs cellular or Wifi internet to send/rcv iMessages.

Non-iPhones can send/rcv text messages without a data connection but cannot send/rcv MMS (picture messages) without a data connection.

You never identified what type of phone is being used.

All of a sudden everything just started working this morning.

They didn't change any settings since the last time. Only difference is they went to a larger city. But when they tried to manually update the PRL in the larger city it still errored out.

They're able to receive texts without touching any settings. They had to change Voice Roaming to Domestic and International to send texts

Weird issue. I suspect that tech support hadn't fully provisioned the phone for International roaming but it is good to hear the issue seems to be resolved now.
