    Freedom Mobile is running a new promotion to counter The Big Three's move to eliminate data caps: for as little as $70/month, they'll also give you unlimited/throttled data, but will throw in a free phone as well.

    The icing on the cake here is that of the free devices on offer there are at least two that you might actually want:

    Apple iPhone XR - 64 GB - requires $75/month plan
    Samsung Galaxy S9 - 64 GB - requires $70/month plan

    The catch? You'll have to commit to 2 years of service; Not sure what happens to your device if you cancel before then. And in case you were wondering, $75 currently gets you a monthly data bucket of 15 GB, with a bonus of 3 GB for 24 months. $70 gets you 12 GB with the same 3 GB bonus until you "pay off" your free phone.

    too bad those of us that are on the $50 EveryWhere plan, can't take advantage of the phones at a decent price.

    Now the question is, what is the cost of the device if you leave before 2 years....what is the buy out...if its great, then it may be worth opening and closing the line to get the discount one should be able to normally without having to jump loops.

    From what a store agent told me and thereafter confirmed by Freedom customer service, Freedom only offers the AB$0LUTE phones on the Big Gig/Text+Talk $60, $70 & $75 plan. They will not offer $0 phones on the $90 or $115 plan. I said this was silly as the consumer is paying more money. The response was these higher ($90/$115 plan) give great value already, therefore, no $0 phone and if a phone is needed, you are required to set up a tab or pay full cost.

    Focusing on the $115 plan, the price point is still too high not for the value, but for the coverage. It's $120 less $5 for auto-pay so $115. This gives you 30GB of data, 3 bonus GB's which expire after 24 months (confirmed) and you get a 5GB data bucket to use when outside of the Freedom network for both Canada & the USA.

    You can use your unlimited voice portion of the plan on both sides of the border but lets not forget, if in the USA or a partner network within Canada, data is limited to 5GB and thereafter, confirmed by the Freedom customer service agent will be throttled between 128 - 256Kb/s.

    As for the voice portion, coverage is still paltry in Canada and if you could truly roam on a partner network, many could live with this but there's still fringe areas which the device/sim will try to maintain a Freedom signal, it's not strong enough so the device is useless.

    Using Bell as an example, they offer a 20GB all-inclusive plan for $125 BYOD and have some $0 phone options as well, nothing required to be paid upfront. It's a 2 year term and the plan is shareable where you can add additional lines (for a minimal fee) which share the unlimited minutes/data both in Canada/USA (no 5GB cap - like Freedom). Great if you have multiple lines in your household. This plan allows you to go over your data and it's billed at $10.00 per 100MB, up to 500MB ($50 charge) and thereafter, you pay $0.12 per MB ($120 per GB). Expensive but the option is there for multiple line sharing so in the end, dependent on the number of lines, even if you go over, there's a significant savings.

    Alternatively, you can opt for the 20GB plan which doesn't charge overage and you're paying $125 for Canada/USA all-inclusive calling/data bucket and if you exceed, you're not paying extra but unfortunately, you can not add additional "share" devices.

    These plans do offer subsidy and $0 phones like Freedom.

    Freedom is heading in the right direction but the coverage is the "key" factor here, not the plan offerings. When speaking with Ahmed in customer service, he was saying that Shaw plans within the next 24 months to introduce Shaw Mobile and it will be the parent brand with Freedom Mobile being the sub-brand. Similar to Rogers/Fido. So I think they want to gain a large subscriber base and potentially provide future offerings for migration.

    In the end, great value but limited coverage - if you can't use it, you're paying for nothing.

    As for phone costs, I hear they tab the full cost of phone which for the XR is $1,029 and the S9 is $849. This is pre-tax and goes does in 24 equal payments. Should you leave, you pay the remaining device balance + applicable taxes.

    In the end, you have 3 main carriers in Canada - Bell, Telus & Rogers. They have their affiliated sub brands and will not allow a established or transitioning entrant to mess with their business. If Freedom comes out with a WOW factor plan or turns on coverage in other areas of Canada which they are currently doing, the consumers win but the major companies will price match to ensure it's a streamlined cost across the board and as a consumer, it's all about cost/coverage and usability.

    Michael: This plan has 20GB of data for each line, if you want 40GB you can get this plan, If one of the person is large user of data it would be sufficient and would be the best value for your money, let's say if one wants more data like 30GB and the other uses 10GB this would be the best plan.

    Unfortunately not unbelievable, Boz. Yeah it's $125/mo. Yes it's shareable. Sure add a tablet to share = $10/mo. Add a 2nd phone/line =$85/mo. Thus $125 + $85 = $210. And there's your $105/mo x 2. (Disclaimer: I may not have unearthed all the T&C's buried there)
    And where'd they dig up those pathetic scripts - King Tut's tomb?

    I stand corrected. They changed their terms & conditions about 2 hours after releasing the new plans. I was able to secure a 20GB Canada/USA plan and add a secondary phone for $25 to this plan making it a total of $150. Received notification (30 days) the other day stating the lines need to be:

    - Separated onto their own accounts within 30 days ($125 each) - 20GB each + Canada/USA calling
    - Kept as a "family plan" add a line at $85 so - $210 total - 20GB sharable + Canada/USA Calling
    - Cancelled under 15 day buyer remorse (no minutes) due to change in terms by Bell

    Decided to cancel as price was too high and no real savings. Usual tactics by the BIG 3 goblins LOL!

    Wow! Thanks for the follow-up. I'm sure sorry that happened to you!

    My goal in asking these questions is to try to find a "reasonable" plan for my daughter and her boyfriend, who live in Canada, but visit the US two to three times monthly. I gave her a FreedomPop phone with no monthly cost that she's been using and has fit her US usage needs well for a while now, but that free plan is finally ending, and we'll have to start paying for her to have service when she visits the US.

    They are both currently on the Bell 10GB plan from around Christmas, 2017, which they like, but it's too expensive to use in the US. It started out at $60/mo (~$68 total), but has gone up to $65/mo (~$73 total).

    I thought maybe if there was a cheap way to add a 2nd line to the Bell "Bring your own device - Canada & U.S. calling + 20 GB of shareable data $125.00/mo" plan, it might not be too much more expensive than what they are currently paying. But despite how it looked on the Bell website, that's not how it works!

    So now I'm thinking about proposing the Public Mobile $60 plan that includes 8.5 GB (@ 3G Speed) Canada Data + 2 GB (Additional) US Data + Unlimited Talk & Text Canada/US. The big advantage would be having just one phone to keep track of, which is much nicer than the FreedomPop phone, that has service that will work in both Canada and the US, including 2GB of US data. The disadvantage would be having only 8.5 GB of LTE to use in Canada (vs 10GB on the Bell plan), and not only that, but throttled to 3 Mbps.

    Oh, well. We'll see.
