I'm pretty sure that's still going on, but the eligible phones aren't great (Samsung A03s or Moto G Pure). And the refill amount is $150. I just did this a couple weeks ago though and picked up the A03s as a backup phone... If it helps, my receipt says "PRO-217: Prepaid Device On Us with $150 Purchase"
For the sake of covering the details, did you refill to an existing account or set up a new line?

I've always added it to an existing account - on the gf'd Walmart plan. Request the pin to be 'redeemed later' or they will try to apply it immediately to your account. You want to redeem later because you want to, first: 1) swap your sim into the new phone, 2) wait a day or two until your new phone is recognized ("registered") by TMo, and then 3) apply the refill, making the new phone eligible for unlock (add $100 or more). It's been a few years since I've last done it but have unlocked 3 phones this way. *Probably worth verifying the current unlock policy to see if it hasn't changed, to be safe.

They won't do that in my neck of the woods. They have to apply it immediately or they won't sell it to you.

You might have to try different stores. Or different employees.

Glad it worked out for you.

    re: sync
It depends on what and how much you want to sync. I use a combination of: a) Google account, of course, for anything Google related, b) Nova launcher for desktop, look and feel, apps list c) SMS Backup and Restore for text messages, it can also do phone logs, d) an SDHC card, if there are any files, e.g., music, images, that I want to move over. This might be more manual than you like but I like to manage it myself with a semblance of control over the process.

Thread on reddit says Samsung A03s and Moto G Pure are being offered for $150 refill. Neither personally compelling.
