Trying to configure a smartphone for my elderly mom

My old 5" HD R1 that's in perfect condition (Amazon stopped putting ads on them). Installed Nova Pro and created three simple screens. Added a 16GB SD card (Marshmallow will integrate it into phone's memory). Side loaded the Asus flashlight. Set icons and text to large. Pixel icon pack. Locked the launcher. Gonna use white dots to help her line up the usb plug and find the power button.

Swipe up for a programs list (disabled/hid many), swipe down for programs search (Marshmallow does not do well with swipe-down for notifications).

Main screen has a clock and most-used apps.

To the right, a gallery/camera widget and battery meter.

To the left, Weather Channel app (only weather app that is accurate here, an old version which is easier to read), a Drudge widget for news and a sticky note.

Gonna put her on Red Pocket (ATT) 500/500/500 for $8/month.

It's an interesting design problem. There are old folk's launchers but they generally suck. Turns out a premium launcher like Nova Pro works best ($3 w coupon). I started out with the Evie launcher and kind of copied it but better.

For my mom it was locking the launcher with a single screen that did the trick. She would always move all the icons around, delete some etc. Touch screen anything isn't her strong point - but incredible 5 star meals are.

Sounds like you've done a great job already the only recommendation I would have is for a single screen not left / right items.

SnapFon for my elders. Dumbphone with quick on/quick off makes it zero CS for me.

Trying to configure a smartphone for my elderly mom

We found Big Launcher to work best for my Mom on Android. I think I had to add a ring lock app and a disable screen lock app.

But Big Launcher was the simplest but it’s not fancy.

***Update*** Looks like the Pro Version of Big Launcher is no longer available, seeing some poor reviews.

Problem was it froze sometimes so that required assistance.

Funny thing is IOS despite being “Fancier” is actually easier for her to use after a few tweaks.

Something with the design works better, maybe the single home button or the difficulty in moving apps or the ability to keep apps from being deleted and no App Drawer are all a plus.

Only issue on IOS is the updates would pop up on the screen, but these pop-ups can be disabled on setup.

Android is great, but IOS worked better in this situation.

I was wondering if there's a Bluetooth fob that can be worn around the neck that calls 911 for those, "Help! I've fallen and....." moments.
