Got a Simple Mobile Alcatel Raven for $4.99

Kroger/Dillons has a digital coupon on their web site for $10 OFF any TracFone, Simple Mobile, Total Wireless phone sold in the store, good until May 14, 2019. Coupon for $10 OFF TF, SM, TW phone

I loaded the coupon to my Dillons shopper's card and went browsing at my local store. They have some Tracfones in the $25 to $50 range. A Rebel 4 for $49.99 which will be $39.99 with the coupon. I didn't really need a phone so didn't want to spend that much.

I saw a Simple Mobile Alcatel Raven, regular price $29.99, on sale for $14.99. I asked the clerk if I could use the coupon with it, she said she could run it through and see what happened. The coupon worked and brought the price down to $4.99, plus 0.46 tax, total $5.45.

I've never had an Alcatel phone and wasn't impressed with their reviews, but for around 5 bucks I'll give it a shot. It's an A574BL; being "BL", it should work with TF/T-mo and TF/AT&T like my wife's BOGO Fiesta 2. Later on I'll swap the BYOP TF/AT&T from my LG Q6 into it and see if it works. If it does, it can be a backup phone for my Q6.

The Alcatel Raven works surprisingly well for a budget phone. A bit slow is the only complaint.

Wow! $4.99 is a mighty good price!

Did the phone get any OS or Android Security updates after you got it up and running?

No, I just checked but no updates. Security patch level is December 5th, 2018.

It's relatively free of bloatware. Has over 10GB available out of the box. The screen seems to be responsive, but the "GoBack/Return" key sometimes takes a few taps to work. It has double-tap to turn screen on/off.

Yes Monday when I was grocery shopping at Kroger I did see this phone clearance priced at $14.99.

I didn't know about the e-coupon at the time thankfully.

Nougat is making me give this one a pass.

I'm about to say something that will probably shock people.

I do not need any more low end phones that I will never actually use as a phone or WiFi playtoy.

    I don't need to waste $5.29 on something that I don't need.

Yes temptation still tugs at me.

Some members were lamenting the fact that there are few inexpensive GSM smartphones to replace the older ones like the L15G Sunrise. This would be a good buy. Also, it has 5" screen size and 5.5" height, which some people prefer over the bigger phones like the Fiesta 2 or Moto E5.

My Ralph's did not have anything on clearance and all the others were $25-30 before $10 discount , not worth it for something I do not really need , ....but at 5 bucks out the door I would have bought it !

I can see this one as a good starter phone or a replacement for one that has been broken or lost.

If someone did not have a smart phone and wanted an update to feature phone.

I just have too many lower end phones that I'm not going to use as it is.

I enjoy goofing around with new toys but I really need to stop if it isn't something that I would use.

You should have had it price scanned. It most likely would have proven to be priced at $14.99, as others have discovered in the past.
