Reports suggest that for Canadian emergency alerts turning off LTE is a workaround. Guess one could try doing that while sleeping.

That was actually my question: I have turned off LTE and on 3G now only.
Is any one tried that and is it actually working?
It was amber alert in Toronto yesterday.
PS this does not make sense to me. Chatr is 3G only, they don't get alerted?

Here we go again! The people of Ontario receive a 6am message alerting them to a serious problem at the NUCLEAR POWER PLANT. It ended up being a false alarm!!!

Ontario clearly can't do anything right with this system. Wake up an entire province at 3am for a little girl that was at her uncles, because I can be so proactive in bed about it and now this, 6am nuclear disaster that didn't happen.

    Albertans Angry Over Amber Alerts

Apparently the alert was for people within 10km of Pickering and woke people up as far away as Ottawa and Thunder Bay.

    Definitely a miss.

All my phones received it, even ones wthout a SIM card (kinda a plus), but we're in Kingston, over 200 KM away.

Also now I'm debating turning the whole feature off, Ontario has done such a poor job of implementing it.... Since coming in, waking people up at 3am for Amber Alerts and false alarms about nuclear disasters.

    Thumbs down Ontario, thumbs down.

How can you turn feature off? Seems like these alerts override all phone settings.

I would love to get rid of these alerts altogether. IMO its not used properly and subject to more domestic disputes than actual threats. CRTC sucks

it's really not consistent. I have 2 phones and data and LTE turned off on one and still got alert once, but most of the time doesn't go off.

Correct. Canada misuses/abuses the alert system by making everything a Presidential Alert which supposedly cannot be turned off on an LTE phone. Some people like you sometimes have luck by switching their phones to 3G only. I saw in your next response that this sometimes works for you too, but not always.

I would also love to get rid of these alerts. But I keep getting woken up because 1) everything is OK at the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station so don't worry, 2) Oops, previous emergency was a mistake folks so stop worrying, 3) a father who picks up his daughter every afternoon from school is at odds with his ex-wife so the ex has to call the police to get him arrested for no reason, 4) a mother is on a bus with her daughter from Sault St. Marie to Toronto so if we see her in the bus in the middle of the night can we call 911 -- WTF, can't the police contact the bus driver on the bus radio? And so on, and so on, and so on.

I wish our alert system was like the American system where not every single message is a Presidential Alert.
