FreedomPop: solution for excessive data usage of FP Messaging App (Android)

Assuming you insist to use FreedmPop for voice calls (for example, because of integration with native dialer) and do not want to use alternate solution like Google Voice, the solution to the problem is following:

    1. Forbid background data usage for Freedompop Messaging App in settings.

    2. Stop FP Messaging App ("Force Stop" or "Disable" in phone settings). You will not need this app anymore for voice calls, but you may need it for text messages or if you want to see your account status/data usage. In this case, open app and kill it again. This app consumes cellular data (a lot of data) even if the phone connected via wi-fi

    2. Obtain your SIP credentials. See
    https://www.howardforums.com/showthr...SIP+freedompop
    or
    https://forums.freedompop.com/us/dis...#Comment_47387

If you can not root your phone, you can take any rooted phone (no SIM card required, wi-fi connectivity is OK), to install this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...freedompop.ott

This is very similar to FP Messaging App, but it works on non-freedompop phones.

    3. After you get your Freedompop SIP credentials, buy Android/IPhone version of Acrobits Softphone ($6). This SIP softphone supports push notification by importing SIP credentials to Acrobits servers.

If you do not need inbound calls, you can use free softphones like Zoiper or CSipSimple instead of Acrobits and you are done here.

    4. If you need inbound calls, configure new account on Acrobits Soft Phone using FP SIP credentials and set push notification in configuration. At this point you will be able to place and receive phone calls using your FP account and phone number.

Note: SMS will not work with Acrobits/Zoiper/CSipSimple.
All above softphones can be integrated with native dialer and contacts.

Are you the developer of Acrobits? Because this is the second time in less than 2 months that you've started a thread telling people about this "solution".

I've only had limited experience with calling/messaging using FP VoIP, and that's with a FP ZTE Prestige 2, which uses FP Sprint, that I bought for someone else to use when they visit the US 2 to 3 times monthly, but I do watch the account, and I have NOT noticed any unusual data usage.

With that FP ZTE Prestige 2 phone/service, the user simply dials from the default dialer. Is that still using the FP Messaging app?

As an aside, that FP ZTE Prestige 2 phone and the FP Sprint service has worked surprisingly well, and much better than I expected for a $19.99 phone, that was actually $4.99 NET after the $15 TopCashBack deal.

What's described in the first post seems unnecessarily complicated, but I guess if someone is actually experiencing the "excessive data usage of FP Messaging App" described, maybe it would be worth the trouble.

I definitely don't have any financial connection to Acrobits, but I do second the recommendation in general. It's a very nice app, and I've used it on and off as my main calling app with several VOIP providers.

For Freedompop, anyone who can use Google Voice for VOIP calling and texting can skip all this. All you lose is the zero-rating but you gain that usage over WiFI doesn't count so it's a good deal.

No, I am not developer of ACrobits, CSipSimple or Zoiper.
The problem is that Freedompop forums are full of complains of data usage problems:

    https://forums.freedompop.com/us/dis...gh-data#latest
    https://forums.freedompop.com/us/dis...my-data#latest
    https://forums.freedompop.com/us/dis...a-usage#latest
    https://forums.freedompop.com/us/dis...a-usage#latest
    https://forums.freedompop.com/us/dis...er-wifi#latest

FreedomPop ignores these complains and their moderators do not allow posts that mention alternative clients.

So, I post solution here from time to time (Google indexes these posts and help the victims of FP data usage issue).

Also, the instruction in my initial post in this topic is updated comparing to my December's post (that topic went to offtopic veryfast).

Regarding Acrobits: it is the only SIP phone on Android (and, possibly, IPhone) that allow reliable incoming phones without excessive battery drain (it has proxy that handles push notification). There are tens of thousands (possible, hundreds of thousands) of FP users, significant number of the uses F as primary mobile operator, so, this solution is very important to them.
If you know free SIP Android Phone that support Push Notification, I will be happy to edit my initial post to replace Acrobits by this app.

    .
Yes, it uses Messaging App (unless you pay for Premium Voice feature).

I use Groundwire. Same developer, same (or better) capabilities. I can't now 100% remember if Groundwire or Acrobits is the "flagship" of the two, but I believe when I did the comparison I concluded that Groundwire was the Enterprise app and Acrobits was the mainstream app.

Both apps are well worth the price of admission. Independently I, too, put my FP credentials in Groundwire and deleted the FP app from my actual FP phone. It works quite well. Like several others in this forum, I use my GV number for everything, and mostly use Hangouts for calling. I don't use the FP DID for any purpose other than as a forward-to for GV or the occasional "I don't want to give someone my real number" gig. Groundwire works well in that application. It almost always works for inbound. Hangouts is a bit less reliable. Regularly they both ring.

The best part: the developer sporadically offers the apps at the bargain price of $0.99. Several months ago I got mine during such a special. Both apps were offered at that same price so that's why I did the research to determine which was the "better" app so that my dollar would get more value.

Monthly cycle about to happen. Have an account configured not to top up. Used up all the data running speed tests (~100MB a pop). Att is super fast around here, 60-80 mbps down, 10-20 mbps up.

We'll see what happens in 4 or 5 days when the account cycles.

^^Account cycled this morning. Suspension message went away. Data bucket renewal does not include the overage from last month.

If you do not want to buy Acrobits, you can use free Zoiper Beta that supports Push Notification:

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...zoiperbeta.app

    Remember: it has expiration date.

I just took a simple route by going with FreeUP's free plan on a ZTE Z223 flip phone. No more app. requirement to make phone calls, which is all I need.

I think u need to have some activity on d FreeUp rewards app from time to time. Not sure where that’s written but that’s what I remember reading on HoFo.

Nope, you just need to login to their website and "renew" the free plan a few days before the end of the plan each month. Set a calendar reminder and it's a pretty minor hassle for free service.
