Which USED iPhone to buy that will be good for 2 years on AT&T?

    Hi,
My friends son wants an iPhone ,
Which one will work for 2 years with At&t ,

He is 14 years old so really should not have a new one or anything too expensive because he will break it , drown it or lose it !

Will an iPhone 5 still work ???? Or ?????

    Thanks for your advise ,

    I'd suggest a 6 or 6S.

I wouldn't buy an iPhone 4 in 2018 to my grandmother . None the less a teenage boy in 2018. I suggest an 5 or higher. A 6 would be perfect.

iPhone 5 isn't supported by apple anymore. (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201624) I'd say a iPhone 6s or better. iPhone 6s would be supported til 2020. iPhone 7 is supported til 2021.

But if he's rough with his things, id say try the iPhone 5 and if he does not break it in a x amount of time, upgrade it to a iPhone 6s/7.

iPhone 5s was the first to use 64bit chips....don’t go with 5 or older because app compatibility might not be there. iPhone 5s is still a very capable phone if you find one used for $50-$60.

An iPhone 5 will still work today, but over the next 2 years, app developers will certainly drop 32-bit and iOS 10 support -- so it'll lose the ability to install most new apps, and some existing apps might also stop working. As GSMPhonePhreak suggested, an iPhone 5s would be much better. (Or you could do something like what Maryland suggested, and consider replacing the iPhone 5 with a newer iPhone after some time, something like a year maybe. However, if you don't already have a spare iPhone 5 on hand, it makes more sense to just go with a 5s from the start.)

AT&T's 3G network should still be up and running 2 years from now, so in terms of AT&T network compatibility, iPhone 3G and later are all sufficient. App compatibility, not AT&T's network, is the real constraint here.

iPhone 6s is probably perfect IMHO.

If he's going to break it, drown it, or lose it, why does it need to be good for two years?

Keep in mind that the older the phone, the older the battery is. An iPhone battery replacement is about $50.

    Thanks for all you ideas.....

As to why since he might kill it , well that's just what a kid does , so you live with it , but buy a cheap IPhone and not a $500-$1000 one..
    ..
And yes knowing how long Apple will support each model with updates is important ,

Will a Verizon iPhone work on At&T ?

It should, yes. Last I knew, Verizon wasn't even locking them the way AT&T does.
