Unlocked non-CDMA phones on Verizon? When?

Since CDMA in the U.S. is going away at the end of the year, and since VoLTE is pervasive, is it ever going to be possible to stick an activated Verizon SIM into an unlocked phone that lacks CDMA, but that supports the Verizon LTE bands and get service? Already, Verizon has at least one LTE-only network (Alaska).

They already do this, as long as the device supports VoLTE.

https://opendevelopment.verizonwireless.com/ is a great place to check if they officially support a handset or not. I’m unsure if they will activate a non-CDMA device if it is not on that site, though. Maybe someone else can speak better to that?

You have been able to use the AT&T iPhones that lack cdma for awhile now. There are several unlocked android phones that people use also.

I tried it on an LG phone. It sees the Verizon LTE network but won't register. It doesn't show any APNs and won't allow me to add an APN.

What phone? Did you put an already active sim in the phone or you tried to activate it on a new sim?

Active SIM. LG Stylo 3. It has the LTE bands for Verizon and sees the Verizon LTE network, but won't register on it. No APN shows up, and it won't allow me to add an APN.

Just to verify, which LTE bands? I remember reading somewhere that registration occurs only on a certain LTE band, so if that specific band isn’t there the device can’t register.

The visible owned prepaid service from Verizon, currently in beta, is VoLTE only. And so far only iPhones. For whatever reason, they support the iPhone 8/8+ non CDMA models but not the 7/7+. It is unknown whether the 7 modes is missing something for Verizon VoLTE, or if it is arbitrary. The same rules may apply for mainline Verizon when CDMA is turned off.
iPhone X is my current primary phone. I have older model iPhones and Moto phones available on other lines. Currently prepaid, though would consider postpaid on right plan.

An unlocked phone has to support Verizon version of VoLTE

I was interested in this phone: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1445086-REG but there is no way to know if it will work with Verizon VOLTE.

according to that chart it says it's not compatible with Verizon & sprint. but works for AT&T & T mobile. here's another listing on amazon that states it won't work on CDMA carriers just AT&T & T mobile - https://www.amazon.com/Samsung-SM-A9.../dp/B07KQN4PL3

They say the same thing about all phones without CDMA.

Remind me what is Verizon’s version of VoLTE, over AT&T’s or TMobile’s versions?
