Maybe OTA updates need a data connection to get the update notification even though it will download the actual update over wifi.

    Maybe make/model dependent.

Sometimes you just need to have a (compatible) sim installed, active/inactive doesn't matter. Makes it visible to the network which apparently is the starting point. I got nowhere with an older phone until I installed an (inactive) sim and then the updates started. I don't know how it all gets coordinated.

I tried an AT&T un-activated sim (just because it was handy), got a message all up to date. I'll try a vz sim when I get home. Pretty sure I dont want to use the sim that came with the phone,as neither phone nor sim has ever been activated.

Ok, Home now. tried an unactivated vz tf sim, still no update available...go figure.

It had already downloaded and all I had to do was to authorize the update.

LadyLC, I manually downloaded and installed my update, based on your post. Since then, I've gotten several texts from TF "Your phone requires 1 or more software updates. When you receive a notification, please sign on to Wi-fi and click "Install" to proceed with this secure update." I haven't gotten any notification that I know of, just the texts.

Are you also getting these texts? Is there something more I need to do, to finish the update process?

melman, I did get a 2nd text with the same information that you posted, a few days later on 08/07/2019.

I checked and no other software update/release was pending.

I just got another text about this. That makes at least half a dozen so far. I got maybe 2-3 before the 13th which I deleted, and also on 8/13, 8/16, 8/21, and today 8/26. Will they ever end?

I`ve been receiving a few of those texts a week on a Moto E5 since April 11. I believe I received the update during that time, but the messages keep coming. At least I`m not being charged, although I have more text than I could ever use.

Since August 3, 2019, when my Rebel 4 updated to the July 1, 2019, Android security patch level, I've received 25 of those texts. This evening I was fooling around trying to copy my contacts to an old I-phone, and the Rebel started downloading and installing a new security patch, dated September 1. I can't say I noticed a notification on the Rebel screen about this software update, but it began right after I did a restart. I normally do a restart every time I install updates from Google Play, which last occurred two days ago.

    Go figure.

OP here. I had a chat session with them, here's the relevant portion:

If the WiFi is disabled, typically the store manager or other upper management would need to call store support. It could be something as small as the internet provider messing something up, or something more serious with the wiring. Unfortunately there's no real way of knowing unless they call. I can certainly send a ticket letting them know this has been a concern for you! That's probably the case, they might just not be aware. Most store computers are connected directly via Ethernet cable so it probably hasn't been noticed. I'll definitely bring this to their attention!

Are you posting on the right thread?
Confused about what this has to do with the subject.
