If you're in the market for a Wear OS-powered smartwatch you'll definitely want to hold off on any purchase until at least September 10th. That's when Qualcomm is expected to announce a much-needed update to its ancient 2100 Snapdragon Wear chipset.

Tech bloggers like Michael Fisher (Mr. Mobile) are getting "save the date" emails directly from Qualcomm; from the graphic above it's fairly obvious that the event is smartwatch-related.

I call the 2100 chip "ancient" because it's now more than two years old. If you've ever wondered why Wear OS watches are so huge, with batteries that only last about a day, and why so few of them have extra features like GPS and NFC, you can thank the 2100 for pretty much all of that. Here's a taste of a hit piece that Ron Amadeo wrote on the subject for Ars Technica earlier this year:

The Wear 2100 wasn't even a good chip when it was new.
Read the first link below to see why he's right.

Hard-core watch nerds might lament Qualcomm's missed opportunity in not choosing October 10th for their announcement. But there's no time for a luxury like that—Wear OS needs a better chipset, now.

I bet Qualcomm has a sore wrist from where Google’s been twisting it behind their back
