Best $200-$250 second hand or new phone

I'm trying to find a phone for my wife who mainly uses a phone for talking, texting, & apps (no gaming). Think it needs to be in the 5" to 5.2" range and be as light as possible. Must have good volume for calling, notifications, etc. and decent speaker.

She also tends to drop my old LG Ultimate 2 a lot so she needs something durable although I intend to get a good case & screen protector. Want an unlocked phone so I can use with Tracfone's BYOP using Verizon.

I would prefer it to be more of a stock Android but I'm flexible on that. I'm willing to spend $200 and possibly up to $250 if absolutely necessary.

I had originally thought the Moto G5 Plus might fit the bill but not after reading about poor volume issues.

Since the Moto G5 Plus probably wouldn’t work how about the Moto X4?

A Google Pixel would be great but still pretty expensive used. Found one for $210 B Grade Refurbished but would that be a gamble?

    Open to any suggestions!

My wife's Moto G5+ is plenty loud and she's never complained.

Nice to hear your input on the Moto G5 Plus ST Dog! So even though I’ve come across several threads complaining about the volume being too low do you think it’s just about getting a good one?

I really don't know. She's had phones that were worse, and not complained about ts one. I've not messed with it much, but the few times I tried it was plenty loud.

Ambient noise may be a factor for some. So if you're often in a noisier environment it might not work.

I have a sample of 1, so I don't know if it really varies or if it's just different needs/expectations.

I'd suggest get one that you can easily return, SIM swap, and test.

I haven't really looked at phones for 6+ mo to offer any suggestions.

Moto G5+. I have had one for 15 months and love it so much I just bought another one brand new for $160 from Walmart. I put my old one on Freedompop and will use the new one on Tracfone until something better comes along. Walmart is sold out now, as are many others. When the G6 was introduced a few weeks ago Motorola stopped making the G5+ but you can find one if you shop around. The Moto G6 not worth the money.

Dang wish I could find the Moto G5 Plus new for $160 I’d definitely be willing to try one at that price! I’ve been looking at used ones for $200 but that still seems high and new ones are $230.

Comparing the Moto G5 Plus to the Moto X4 which do you think is better?

How about this LG X Venture for $169 . Use the brickseek link in that post to check the inventory of Walmart stores near you. The one near me in Topeka has 3 in stock for $169 each.

That looks like a decent phone. It also looks like it is available for $134.99 at https://www.ebay.com/itm/352197525073 .

OP wants Verizon. That looks to be GSM only.

    Oops!

But probably good, because I might have been tempted!

Unclear whether 701 in the Verizon whitelist (all IMEIs or some or none).

The eBay listing was for 700 and specifically said GSM only and not compatible with Verizon.

Kind of wanting to pull the trigger on a Moto G5 Plus but can't get over concerns about low call volume. Quite a few user reviews mention this and there was never a software update to fix it. On the other hand there are many who don't see this as an issue, although I wonder if it has more to do with some not using the phone for calls much. I did read somewhere it may be linked to what carrier you use and Verizon is one of them. AT&T is terrible in my area so I must use Verizon.

I did read someone listing a simple fix but have no idea whether it works or not... post number 12. Is it possible this fix could affect the call volume?

On another issue I don't think my wife's Tracfone LG Ultimate has a SIM so I simply can't transfer it over to any new BYOP I buy.. is this correct?
