I wouldn't be surprised if Google got threatened in some way by the Canadian telecom industry or even the Canadian government and changed their plans. But that's just a wild guess.

I've been using GV for calls and texts for years. I've experienced no quality issues. And isn't Hangouts getting deleted when they nuke Google+?

This is specifically about GV calls over WiFi/Data which wasn't possible directly until recently. Previously it required Hangouts + Hangouts Dialer and before that apps like GrooVeIP.

Hangouts is not related to Google+ and no plans to kill off Hangouts. They serve different markets.

I understand that, I can read. My statement stands.

You couldn't have been using GV VoIP, which is what this thread is about, "for years", because the beta testing for VoIP functionality started around 9 months ago, and just became available to everyone that wasn't in the beta group around a week ago.

Hangouts, as we know it today, is supposed to be discontinued eventually, but the last report from Google was that no timeline has been set, it won't be anytime soon, and I hadn't heard that it has anything directly to do with Google+.

But at this time, the GV app/system is NOT ready to replace Hangouts for VoIP and messaging over data only. Just read through the last few pages of this thread to see the various issues with the GV app/system that still need to be fixed!

Then you failed in conveying what you were trying to say in your "statement". Please clarify.

Hangouts is a very good app/system for VoIP and messaging over data using a GV #. As good as Hangouts is, it's annoying and hard to understand how bad the GV app/system is at doing the same things.

As we know it but it'll be rebranded and continue.

I doubt the average user will see much difference functionally.

Well, that's encouraging, especially if Google never gets the GV app/system up to the level of how well Hangouts works overall, at least for users like me! And considering what Google has just done to Google Contacts on a computer, it's not looking too promising!

Thanks. I fin my WiFi GV is not ringing for incoming calls and showed this calls as missed calls.

Is it a settings issue or bug ?

Do we need to disconnect Hangout messaging from GV for WiFi enabled GV to work?

    Thanks for sharing.

Since the last update, not only does it not ring but there's no missed call notifications. GV is getting worse than it was when I started the beta program 8-9 moths ago.

I just got another GV update this morning, but what it might address, if anything being discussed here, remains to be seen.
