AT&T iPhone 7 Plus - do I need to get it unlocked?

First of all I've never owned an iPhone so I don't know much about them other than that my wife wants one. She used her friend's iPhone and says that the reception was much better than with her own Moto G4. (I know that there are a dozen other factors that could have effected the reception, but I'm not going to go there.)

A neighbor whom I know and trust is selling his iPhone 7 Plus that's AT&T branded. Question: can I use this iPhone with any AT&T MVNO? Do I need to get it unlocked? I've read here about unlocking issues with the iPhone but it seems to be mainly with Verizon MVNOs. The AT&T MVNOs that I'm familiar with (Red Pocket, AirVoice, Pure Talk, H2O) all have more-or-less the same price structure and coverage. My wife is currently with Boom! but I can have her number ported. AT&T coverage is as good as VZW where we live so that's not a problem.

Are there any issues I should be aware of or questions I should ask my neighbor? He did a factory reset and unlinked his iCloud account.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or advice.
My smartphone is a lot smarter than I am.

Your neighbor should unlock the iPhone before you complete the purchase.

Make sure his obligation with the phone being paid off is also met.

IPhone plans tend to lock the phone to the original company for one to two years of payments. Check that is all paid off.

Check that all passwords are turned off.

Check that FIND MY IPHONE is turned off

Check the serial number with BOOM to make sure they say it can activate.

Just an FYI - The iphone native texting app Imessage will not work via Apple servers on AT&T Red Pocket, Airvoice, or H2O - it will work on PureTalk USA because they have certification with Apple. Instead, with the other 3 services, all text messages will be sent as SMS & photos will have trouble sending, if at all.

Verizon mvno's do not have this problem - so Imessage on Red pocket Verizon would work fine & dandy. The others don't offer Verizon.
However, this phone may not have the cdma radio's ........ but it may as well ........ I just don't know.

He says it's "practically new" so I suspect that he has not owned it for long. I'll make sure it's paid for. Thanks.

This, otherwise do not buy the phone.

If it isn't paid for they will not unlock it.

I am reviving this old thread of mine from last year because a separate issue has come up that this reply might pertain to. My sister-in-law is upgrading from a dumbphone to an iPhone SE that my son no longer uses. I already did a factor reset on the iPhone and made sure his Apple ID, iCloud, etc. was no longer synced with this iPhone.

She uses H2O and I was thinking I can simply take out the SIM card, insert it into the iPhone SE, and it would be ready to use. I already know that H2O will work with this iPhone because I put an active H2O SIM card in it and it worked. My son purchased it on eBay when he was using Cricket, so it must be an AT&T branded iPhone.

But I didn't try to text, and when I looked at this reply to my previous thread, it made me wonder if she will be able to text using this iPhone SE. Does trek83's comment in my old thread still apply?

you may want to consider upgrading from the iphone SE, because rumor has it that the phone will no longer be receiving security updates - https://www.howardforums.com/showthr...1913713-ios-13

I suspect some confusing. iMessage should work fine on H2O, RP ATT, etc. The general trouble spots for ATT MVNOs without their own contract with Apple is MMS messages (to non-Apple users), and group texts (on SMS with non apple users).
iPhone X is my current primary phone. I have older model iPhones and Moto phones available on other lines. Currently prepaid, though would consider postpaid on right plan.

I'd wait until iOS 13 is announced before making a decision. The source of that rumor is considered not very reliable.

AT&T iPhone 7 Plus - do I need to get it unlocked?

Who cares about some software that hasn't been released yet anyway? It's not like the phone will just magically stop working because you can't install the latest OS update on it.

But what works for you today and keep using it until it
doesn't.

Thanks to all who have replied. Quite honestly she is not going to buy a new phone, and I'm not going to buy one for her. I just though of this old iPhone that my son has lying around since it would be an improvement over her dumbphone which is unreliable. I'm guessing she would get better call quality on the iPhone as well. More than likely she'll just use it for voice calls anyway, so I'm not too concerned about what version of iOS it has.

Thanks again for the input.
