wonder why switching to paypal stopped the annoying $.01 charges?

I assume because Paypal can draw upon alternate funding (e.g. other credit cards on your account or your bank account) if a given credit card doesn't work, so FP doesn't really have to worry about testing the payment method with $.01 charges to make sure it works.

Merchants (like FP) get charged a fee per transaction. Here's a typical fee for VISA: 2.3% + $0.10

More comprehensive look at processing fees:

    For PayPal: 2.9% + $0.30

PayPal transaction fee for a $.01 charge is 3x for VISA. It's also probably safe to say that not many people use PayPal as a payment source. Then, it's expedient for FP to skip checking PayPal accts.

This also debunks the notion that FP is making money off of these $.01 charges. It costs FP 10x more money than it receives.

You actually don't have to have any funding source to use PayPal. You can make a one-time payment (gifting, prepaid VISA, etc) to an "anon" PayPal acct, then use that anon acct to register with the merchant.

so to avoid the nuisance 1 cent charges, is it better to switch to paypal as the billing provider?

if this is indeed beneficial to Freedompop, i wonder why they don't just make it the default?
