If they don't offer the $20 unlimited, be careful with the fixed data vehicle plans they do offer. They have a 1GB and 5GB Data Connect for Vehicles that is cheaper than the regular data connect. It is currently (as of two weeks ago) the only connected car plan they will put a Mobley/OBDII device on. As of two weeks ago (when I canceled) the 5GB vehicle plan was not LTE. It was max of UMTS/HSPA+. I saw generally poor speeds in the range of 0.6Mbps to 2 Mbps. Occasionally, in a city very near a tower, I saw 4-5Mbps. This was true whether the sim was in the Mobley or another hot spot. In the case of my hot spot a sim on a pre-paid plan would pull in 25-30Mbps LTE. So it was not a Mobley issue, it was the plan.

Get Gen2 unless you find a smoking deal on a Gen1. I would consider $50 for a Gen1 a "Smoke on the Water" type deal.

The Spark is listed on the same AT&T page as all of the other $20 unlimited plan cars with built-in WiFi, but selecting Spark is still a dead end.

The details say that it is for in-car use only, so there’s that.

Its easy enough to emulate OBD-II, multiple listings on eBay. https://www.ebay.com/i/182963904402?chn=ps

The device may simply look for a VIN number, easiest way to guarantee it works for all OBD-II cars, and would also work for electric cars.

Looks like it turns off after 30 mins of no movement. User's guide here: https://fccid.io/2AHPN-HSA-15UA-AA/U...al-3954667.pdf

Also, it certainly does have a SIM card slot: https://fccid.io/2AHPN-HSA-15UA-AA/I...Photos-3954696

Looks like you would need to at least spoof a GPS signal, seems easier to take the SIM card out and swap to another device. If one must spoof a GPS signal AND use an EBD II emulator, well, it just wouldn't be worth the trouble. I would say swap SIM and see what happens.

What are everyone's thoughts on the CCU Mobley moving forward after contracts end. Do you think it will be grandfathered for a long while, or nixed sooner rather than later?

Likely grandfathered, unlimited iPad plan has been around quite some time and still kicking. Money is money after all.

AT&T's past policy has always been to grandfather plans for existing customers regardless of contract status and there's no reason to believe that they would behave any differently this time. Add to that, given the expense of acquiring postpaid customers these days it would be senseless for AT&T to toss away a large number of paying accounts. Even at the relatively low rate it's pretty likely AT&T is net positive on the plan.

The new unlimited In Car WiFi plan (similar to the Mobley) is $30 per month, $10 more than built-in connected vehicle hotspots and the original stand alone unlimited data Mobley plan.

This makes me believe AT&T considers the original $20 stand alone Mobley plan more of a hotspot/data only line in their systems. This is why people can use the SIM in pretty much any device without issues.

The new plan specifically states in vehicle use only and the terms state they can terminate service if the device is used outside a vehicle.
