So as is true of AT&T (SBC) nature they're "continuing" to do just enough to get by.

That leads me to believe then that if AT&T is outpacing Verizon in Philly that AT&T inherited a better network than did Verizon.

I'd LOVE if someone could give a similar breakdown of the inherited networks AT&T and Verizon have in Philly, similar, to what GusHerb94 gave for Chicago.

    Any takers 🤔

There were cables up on that tower a few months ago. But whatever was going on, Verizon didn’t add onto it. Verizon’s quite unimpressive in town, their density is horrible in the burbs.

Verizon should have the better network. They don’t.

AT&T was horrible with tdma and gsm. Cingular was “ok” the old Comcast and cell one. Verizon, the old bell Atlantic mobile, had a better network then either of them even combined. They’ve just sat on their @$$ since 2004.

Im impressed you know what tower im talking about. I always fall to one bar next to it and cant believe they let that happen on a major highway so close to downtown. Thinking maybe they cant add to the current tower...it looks pretty loaded right now. Would they be able to add another tower right next to it i wonder?

Saw this setup in Los Angeles along Wiltshire Blvd and W 3rd Street. Fastest speed I’ve seen in LA right where the first picture was taken. Is this a VZW small cell?

5-carrier aggregation with LAA (4+46+46+46+66) in Oklahoma City, OK on AT&T's commercial network

Those are Sprint Airspan setups. We have those in Chicago, like this one serving the rats in the alley:

I think these are Verizon small cells. Band 13. There were 2 identical setups on opposite sides of the building.

That's a rooftop macro. But yes. Appears to be Verizon.

What’s the difference between macros, oDAS, and small cell?

Macro is something that is usually on a tower, on top of a rooftop, etc

oDAS is outdoor distributed antenna system. Usually groups of antennas in one given area.

Small cell is an antenna that can be placed on street lamps, lights, in right of ways, etc. depending on city ordinances.

That could very well be a mini-macro small cell, essentially a zero footprint macro site. Verizon has a ton all over the NYC area. Based on the equipment it could definitely be one.

Is this a Verizon small cell? This is another pole that was nearby when I was getting the 165 Mbps speed test.

So then it seems like it is in the nature of the ILEC to perhaps not be as competitive in their so-called home markets!? I could see how this could come to be, as one would rest on their laurels in their home market, and then go and try to conquer other markets, all while forgetting about their home market at some point in the future.

Me... I'm more of defend your home turf kinda guy/mindset.

Verizon truly doesn’t give one crap about Philadelphia. They probably laugh that they have as many customers as they do here. That tower is really the only cell site around, so it’s easy to figure out which one you’re talking about. It’s shocking Verizon hasn’t added onto there. Every carrier needs to densify around philly. You go to LA or Miami and there’s a cell tower every .5 miles while stretches of I-95 in Delaware and Maryland don’t have sites for 3-4 miles.
