Driving to Sacramento from LA. How is the network?

I will be driving from Los Angeles to Sacramento and wanted to know if there are any none coverage areas between LA and Sacramento. I will have a Verizon MiFi for backup.

I made that trip several times last year but haven't done it since December. The last time I checked, there are small areas of No Service and quite a bit of Edge which has practically no data. I was usually the driver so I was not able to do a lot of testing. I did have a 6s Plus with band 12 on the last trip.

I've taken the Amtrak San Joaquin Corridor trains many times between Martinez and Bakersfield, including last summer, and while I've never encountered dead spots, there are some EDGE only spots. Of course, on the train I have free WiFi (powered by Verizon), so no worries I've also driven 99 several times, and 5 a time or two, with similar results

Are you taking i5 or CA99? I can't speak for the central valley on TMo. It should be decent. There are probably a few pockets of weak service south of Los Banos . Check Sensorly or Cell Mapper. Service is ok south of Frazier Park
    AT&T... your world, throttled.

Agreed very true back when I had t mobile and drove down to LA from SF I would take CA-99 because of the better data coverage

One could probably look at CellMapper or Sensorly and draw his own conclusions.

Better than it was a few years ago...
I actually saw "LTE" on my recent drive on the 5 and at my pit stop in Lost Hills.
Having "E" was a pain on the 5 when there are places to rest, eat and gas up...

But T-Mobile choked on the 152 heading into Gilroy, that sucked because I wanted to know how many miles I had left into my trip to San Jose. T-Mobile had jack on this stretch of road...

I'd recommend those going up/down I-5 between Los Banos and Grapevine to have a band 12 device.
Looks like most of the central valley (central desert) is band 2.
Even when I've driven up that way on AT&T in the past, coverage was weak in spots with streaming radio drops (It may be better now),

Central Valley is 20mhz band 4 + 5mhz band 12. Band 2 is still being utilized purely for HSDPA.

Take 99 as far as Fresno (from Bay area) several times a year. Pandora plays great. Used to cut out for about 5-10 miles - but didn't last time. I-5, about a year ago, was pretty consistent.
GoogleVoice (domestic call forwarding and cheap intl. calls) Use GV to give us a "home" number in a 2nd location
8 T-Mobile lines - Unlimited talk and text, data. TM One plan. Get $10/mo. rebate on 7 lines for low data use. Net cost about $185-190/mo. We haven't had a landline in more than 17 years.

Cell Mapper disagrees on i5 in the central valley. It may be old data though

Central Valley is Modesto, Merced, Fresno area. 99 passes right through the center of the Central Valley.
