Best birthday gift for WIND ever.

Shaw Communications Inc. is finally poised to get into the wireless business, with a $1.6-billion deal to buy Toronto startup carrier Wind Mobile Corp.

Calgary-based cable operator Shaw announced the transaction on Wednesday evening, noting that while the deal still requires approval from the federal government and the Competition Bureau, it expects it to close during the third quarter of fiscal 2016.

Wind’s former owner VimpelCom Ltd. sold Wind to a consortium of financial investors in September, 2014, for $135-million as well as the assumption of debt obligations. Sources said the total value of the deal was closer to $300-million.

Wind’s shareholders included Toronto’s West Face Capital and California-based hedge fund Tennenbaum Capital Partners.

    More to come....

    Wait, I just realized:

Shaw bids on spectrum, don't take risk of launch, sells it to Rogers for profit, then gets most of the spectrum back for "free" via WIND.

What was that Rogers-Shaw deal worth again?

Yeah Shaw must be laughing all the way to the bank. Rogers paid to buy Shaw's spectrum and give most of it away back to... Shaw.

I don't know how I feel about the acquisition but this definitely paves the way for a nationwide Shaw + Videotron + Eastlink network agreement that covers every province. Videotron never wanted to deal directly with WIND but they would presumably be happy to deal with their fellow cable company Shaw.

So what kind of spectra does Shaw have? Anything in the <2GHz range?

Astounding. I didn't see that coming. One wonders if Eastlink might be up for sale. That would bring in more cable and wireless customers and a larger national footprint for Shaw.
    Sorry about that, chief!

They also waited until WIND was showing profits in its operations (before interest and taxes).
