Off Lease Laptop still connected to someones Data Plan

So I just bought a newer laptop off lease from a refresher. Enabled the WWAN in BIOS, and installed drivers, thought I'd pop a sim in and play with it. Well for some reason it ignores the sim and under Wireless/Networks says Verizon Wireless. It connected! Only at CDMA/3G speeds. But Webpages load, websites work etc. Could anyone explain this?

My thoughts is that its just still on a big business account that they don't even see it and never cancelled it.

    Anyone had this happen?

Of course I don't need it 20GB on AT&T and my fast home cable connection. But I thought this was a tad odd.
    Current Phone: AT&T XS Silver 256GB. T-Mobile / MetroPCS
Android device : Galaxy S9 RedPocket Verizon

    I am no longer a U.S.Cellular User.

One of my used phones I purchased had an active sim on a business account. I told the seller since it was her husbands business account.

I already have unlimited vz data, might as well be nice.

Before you go spending your money on one of these just remember there is no guarantee that every laptop from the same certified Microsoft referber would still have an active SIM. This is probably a one off fluke thing.

I bought a Hyundai certified used vehicle several years ago & it came with XM radio already active. I figured it would run out eventually but I had the car 3 years & the XM radio never disconnected so I got 3 years for free. I always assumed the previous owner paid for several years of XM in advance then traded in the car before it ended. That doesn't mean every used Hyundai will have 3 years of free XM radio.

    off topic i guess....

about the xm radio mentioned above...xm/sirius sends out their cancellation signals at night for the most part. if the radio is turned off while the signal was sent they will try again at a later time...if the radio keeps being off when the signal to cancel is off the cycle of attempts will continue till eventually they stop sending the "kill signal" and you get "free" xm radio for x amount of years.

i used to sell "demo" active radios.

I don't know, SIRIUSXM had no trouble killing the subcription on my wife's car on the date it ended.
