    Broken iPhone, is it salvageable?

    Hey there,

My friend gave me a very broken iPhone 5, and from what I can see it looks like if I got a new screen it might be salvageable? Can anyone who knows more than me what I can check or do to see if it might work?

    Thanks!!

Wow, that's...BAD! I'm no help as I'm an Android fan. I've never seen the guts of an iPhone.

You can check the going price of a screen on Amazon.
I'm sure they've come down since last time I looked.
Edit: I looked again. Maybe $30-$40?
    .
Replacing it is not a big task for someone with the right tools and a delicate touch.
    Search YouTube for repair videos.
Watch at least half a dozen before tackling the job.
    .
This site doesn't have very good prices, but they do have the best pictures:
    https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/iPhone+5+Teardown/10525
    .
Most of my experience has been with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPhone 4S.
Your screen is a lot easier than the 4 and 4S! ( $30 screens)
    .
    Edit:
Home buttons last 1-2 years, then need replacement.
    Batteries might last 2-3 years.
Putting in new ones is pretty easy, and extends the life of your toy.
now with H2O, after Straight Talk LTE sim debacle 4th Quarter 2013.
Currently on locked AT&T iPhone 4S. (backup: iPhone 4)
    iOS: 7.1.2, carrier: AT&T 16.0 , modem: 5.2.00 , Data & MMS just fine.
    Previously at: iOS 6.1.3, carrier 14.2, modem 3.4.03 .

    Broken iPhone, is it salvageable?

Battery easy to replace, but the screen and home button are not for the novice. Some screws are magnetized and a few aren't.

Try iCracked.com for professional help, or Ifixit for DIY instructions and parts.

This is not specific for the OP, but for anyone reading this thread later.
    .
You will have to transfer certain parts from your old screen to your new one.
This one vendor , iRichiFix , supplies a screen fully equipped and ready to go, for more money. (About $100!)

If you are very inexperienced or lack confidence, it might be a way to go.
Not recommending one way or the other.
Choice is up to the individual.

I noticed the home button is gone, I take it that means I would have to buy one of the ones mentioned above? ^

Go look at the iFixit pictures, and half dozen repair videos.
Make up a parts list of missing items.
They're available on Amazon and other places.
    It's not rocket science.

Repairing of cell phones is not for the faint of heart. Dozens of tiny screws and tiny cables involved. Not an easy process for everybody.
Don't make me turn this car around.....

You can probably find someone in the area who can fix it for like $50 or less (at least the damaged screen). You might want to try going into the apple store/best buy and seeing what they say

Nobody can tell from the pictures for sure if other components have been damaged. You might replace the obviously broken parts and find there are other problems as well that prevent it from working. As a hobby project you might try scrounging up the parts and fixing it, but I would not reasonably expect to come out with a fully functioning iPhone.
