Porn ads in 100 new spam topics every night.

90% of the time when I visit Hofo the last few weeks late at night there is a proliferation of dozens of SPAM ESCORTS PORN topics.

Can not anything be done to have these not posted in the first place?

    Thank you.

I'd not only like to see the posts stopped if possible, but see the hands of those responsible shorn from their bodies.

Where (what subforums) are you seeing these posts and are you using the Report Post button to flag them for our attention? We usually try to deal with those situations promptly.

I found 43 posts in the BlackBerry forum. They've now been dealt with. Please use (or continue to use) the Report Post button so that these are promptly brought to our attention. We try to be proactive with these guys, but we appreciate your help when you find them before us. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

One of the problems is that people resort to smart retorts instead of reporting the messages. This only brings the message to the top of the heap. Just report the post and not post a reply saying that you have done so.

    I always report them.
If I see that there are several from the same scuz ball I just report one and include in my report that there are several more from the same person rather than report all of them since they post several at a time.

There's a type of "Stealth SPAM" I've been seeing where someone (a bot?) just copies the the subject of the thread and has a few links to other sites. I've been reporting it. Is there a name for this type of SPAM, so I don't have to explain why I think it's SPAM.

You can call it that, stealth spam. That is exactly what it is, and we appreciate everyone who reports all of the spam. Unfortunately, the moderators cannot be on here 24 hours a day, so those of you who are on late at night, or in the early am, you are a huge help to us. Please keep up the good work, and keep reporting all suspicious posts, especially the call girls and that stealth spam.

Howard may want to consider the Spam-O-Matic vBulletin mod. It could make the moderator's job much easier. Just try it on a test site first and make a database backup before putting it into production.

Great suggestion. We actually do have that functionality; and let me say that it really does make our jobs easier!

Really? With the amount of spam that makes it into the forum, it sure doesn't look like it. Of all the large forums I frequent, HowardForums is the only one that still gets spam on a regular basis. Are you sure it's not just the CAPTCHA, email validation, and other weak methods?

If Howard really does have that add-on installed already, maybe its settings need to be adjusted. For example, is it checking post content against Akismet?

It seems to come in waves. Right now we're seeing more of it, but we deal with it pretty quickly. This isn't an ongoing issue though. Usually it's more sporadic.

We do in fact use Spam-O-Matic and it checks against the StopForumSpam database. This latest rash appears to have not been captured in the database. After it happens enough the database will update to block them automatically in the future.

In the meantime we'll address it as best we can as it happens.

Is this ↑quoted↑ approach OK? There sometimes w-a-y too many to report one-by-one individually.
