Basic phone with 3G and modem capability (AT&T bands)

    Hi all

I really wanted to get the Nokia 515 because it has 3G, USB modem capability, and bluetooth. But being an international phone, it only has 900/2100 3G bands. Any suggestions for similar basic phones that have 3G (AT&T bands) and can function as a USB or bluetooth modem?

    Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (Windows NT 5.1) Presto/2.12.388 Version/12.16)

The Moto G on the Google Play Store for $179 is a stock Android and should work well on ATT and also work with the PDANet & FiFox apps to provide tethering.

Thanks for the reply! I was thinking "dumb" basic phones that have fast data because it seems like they can be added to cheaper unlimited data basic phone plans which would be awesome. Yet to try. Looks like there are at least a couple Nokia Asha models that are counted as basic phones and have 3G or 3.5G data - not sure if they would work as a USB modem or not though.

There's an obscure company that is promoting a basic handset with appears to meet your requirements: http://www.socialmobilecellular.com/gecko/

If executed *well*, this Gecko handset would be an intriguing candidate for the $35 GoPhone plan (http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/pla...id=eESTAcMjmmV). The problem is that the Gecko handset does not appear to be available to U.S. consumers at this date.

However, a few quick Google searches seem to indicate that the last-generation Nokia S40 devices are *theoretically* capable of both DUN tethering (via USB and Nokia Suite software) or PAN tethering (via Bluetooth). The following S40 devices are look promising for compatibility with North American AT&T 3G:
    - X3-02 (HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100)
    - C3-01 (HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100)
    - Asha 303 (HSDPA 850/900/1700/1900/2100)
    - Asha 311 (HSDPA 850/900/1700/1900/2100)

Not sure if the QWERTY handsets are still considered "dumb" phones by AT&T's IMEI sniffer. Hope this helps...

Thanks for the help. I had looked into the Asha 311 as well. A chat session with AT&T just told me that they consider the Asha 311 a smartphone (low gamma smartphone??). Maybe it would work though if just registered it online myself. Will do further research into the Gecko.

Now looking into the Nokia 301. Nokia Chat tells me it can't tether, but I found some other postings online that tell me it can tether via the older version of PC Suite. Any experiences?
