Buying iPhone 5s outright from Rogers... unlocking?

Giving my iPhone 5 to a family member and I'm leaving for a trip soon and would like the new camera on the 5s.

If I buy an iPhone 5s outright from Rogers, can I ask them to unlock it?

I usually buy my phones directly from Apple, but the stores in Montreal only have the gold and silver models. I'm looking for the grey one.

    Thanks!

If you pay full price then they will unlock it for another $50. Not sure if they'd make you wait 90 days in that case, but it's likely.

You don't have to wait 90 days if paying full price for a device from Fido/Rogers.

    FIDO $60/10GB + 5 hours unlimited data
WIND $15 AITF unlimited data (10GB full speed)

is there any way to get them to waive this fee? I have an iPhone 4 that's off contract (just upgraded to a Note 3) and they are still trying to stick me with a $50 fee.

well clearly that's an option now.....3 years later.

I'm trying to sell my old iPhone, the one that I've paid for on contract for the last 3 years, finished my commitment with, and then upgraded to a new device. an extra $50 just to unlock a device I've paid for is a bit of a slap in the face.

So in this case OP will be charged $50 extra..............?
I personally think if someone buys it outright, that fee should be waived, otherwise the OP ends up paying more.
Or can the OP go to the Apple store and get it unlocked with the receipt.

I think both cases are legit.

    Thanks

The unlocking fee is $50. Even if you are off contract, it is $50.

Not sure what you mean when you say that they are trying to stick you with the $50 fee since everyone pays the $50 fee in order to a phone unlocked on Rogers or Fido if they want Rogers or Fido to unlock it.

Sorry, my response was in context to the OP where they are looking to purchase a device outright and get it locked. My suggestion would save them a few bucks and hassle.

Nope they got by the b++lls! IMEI is carrier and server specific. Only rogers can unlock rogers iPhone but yes if buy outright no need to wait 90days but if you buy from app direct it will come unlocked!

I would normally agree but you have options to avoid that $50 unlock fee. Buy from the apple store or buy online from the apple store.
I really think that all carriers should sell unlocked phones from day 1 and that we take a loan if we can't afford the phone.
BTW in some cases roaming is cheaper than getting a local SIM card - Cuba.

Before the IP5s, Rogers full retail pricing of the iPhones were $50.00 cheaper than Apple and when you unlock it, it bounces back to Apple's regular pricing.

Now it is $50.00 to unlock it and that's what they're pocketing.

Kinda wrong to suggest this, the OP "could" get the White or Gold < --- LOL and try it out for 30 days. Maybe the colour might even grow of him, who knows.

I don't think it was always the case that Rogers pricing was $50 less than Apple. I seem to recall that even before having it unlocked, it was close to Apple's price and once you factored in the HUP or admin fees, it was sometimes more than Apple's. Then after paying the $50 unlock fee it was more than Apple's. It never made sense other than as a way to discourage buying off contract from them and to make extra profit if you did.

I bought mine from a stranger that is locked to Rogers, how many days do I wait to have it unlocked? I bought the phone as locked to Rogers so I have no idea if it is under contract or what so ever.

Contract status doesn't really matter anymore. You'll need to wait 90 days after adding it to your account to have it unlocked on your account.
