    ESPN negotiating with VZW

    Net neutrality?

Could/would others like Netflix ever do this?

Yes, while some would like unlimited ESPN content including watch ESPN for live streaming, others would say this violates net neutrality. All sites aren't equal in this case

But aren't they all equal in the sense that all sites could pay to subsidize our streaming of their service?

I am more concerned with exclusive content deals these days. Hopefully if this goes through it is a four carrier negotiation. I like the idea although Verizon better worry about AWS before it starts giving free streaming away.

VZW wouldn't be giving away free streaming, ESPN would be paying for it

Understood. I meant free on the consumer end over Verizon's network.

Dumb pipe or free speech? That is the question.

This is, of course, the beginning of the end of the internet as we now know it. Full fidelity in-stream video internet commercials *coming soon* to your cellular device — "just like on TV!" Be assured that copious bandwidth will spring full-grown from the head of Zeus to stream you those commercials.

This so far untapped revenue source is why Vzn is making such a big deal out of its "free speech" argument in its DC 11-1355 court challenge to the FCC's regulatory authority. Once we legitimize the concept that an ISP can market web content that is not its own, the jig's up. Time to crank down the flood gates.

That's not how net neutrality works. Then you'd have 1000s of ISPs all demanding a cut. AT&T (edit: landline, not AT&T mobility) tried this with youtube, whining youtube was getting a "free ride". Youtube pointed out they were spending $100,000s a day for their service, including use of internet peering points which AT&T also used. As with AT&T, they either provide internet access or they don't, there is no "oh we prefer X, Y, and Z but it's still internet."
