Unlimited Web Browsing in value plans ending June 30

FYI for those not aware...this is now showing on the Speakout Rates page:

"Value Plans that include unlimited browsing will be retired and unavailable for future activation on June 30, 2013. If you've activated this value plan prior to June 30, 2013, it will expire and deactivate at the end of its 30-day cycle. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Service."

Anyone want to hazard a guess as to what options will remain for UWB in value plans after June 30? I haven't had a chance to call their CS yet to ask.

I stumbled upon this news after looking for options for family that was going to be visiting from overseas for a few weeks.

As a bit of a background, I manage two SO lines which are used infrequently (a few calls every few months, but $25 will last 6-12 months for these users). It seems like SO is indicating they'll have some "high" volume packages (I would imagine 1 GB being their upper end), and am hoping that it'll at least match Virgin's pricing ($10 for 100 MB, $25 for 500 MB and $35 for 1 GB) just so I can put the stored credit to good use. I'm also hoping they allow tethering so I can use the data plan with an old Rogers data stick I have lying around for the occasional visits by out of town guests who aren't staying with me.

I'm kind of looking at this as a positive, but with cautious optimism. After all, Rogers still needs to make money from SO, so I don't think we'll see any particularly revolutionary (ie low) pricing for a little while.

Not now with UMB, but they may do so with the proper data plans, since there is a data cap. We don't have enough information yet about the changes that are coming, but I'm hoping that tether will be allowed since there is a limit and a higher price point in the plans.

Sorry but it's unlikely. Most carriers *and* MVNOs love the double-dip... they charge for data but still want to charge extra for the exact same data for tethering, tablets, mifis, etc.

Canadian carriers have not generally charged extra for tethering.

Not on UMB but no one knows what they'll do with real data options.

Sorry, can you tell me which Canadian carriers or MVNOS charge extra for tethering? As far as I know, virtually all data plans include tethering in Canada now. Actually, I even remember tethering off my old $5, 5 MB mobile browsing plan on Rogers.

I'm not as in tune with the Canadian prepaid market as US prepaid or Canadian post paid, so maybe I'm missing something here.

Exactly. Tethering is currently against their TOS. If they change the rules in the future that is up to them, but currently it is against the rules.

It's against their rules for UMB. Hard to extrapolate what they'll do with a completely different data plan structure. No one can really do anything but speculate. Personally, I'd look to the what every other Canadian carrier has done. None technically allowed tethering on UMB if they offered UMB and all allowed tethering without an extra charge in their "full" data plans (aside from the asinine Rogers restriction of only allowing tethering on 1GB+ data options). But consistently in Canada, UMB means no tether, data means no charge for tethering.

I was sent a questionnaire this week from SO gauging my opinion on performance etc. I reveries a $5 credit for filling it out. I was asked what I would like to see improved so I responded full 3G data access with no port blocking.

I'm hoping we see this at the end of June.

Yo should have said "Unlimited 2G data like Tmobile with no port blocking"

You dont need 3G and you will NOT get it beause of 3 simple reasons...

    1) they are not stupid

    2) They want to sell you minutes not unlimited skype

    3) again they are not stupid.
