Keeping the lights on in here

Anyone still use Alltel in any of the six divested properties? Does anyone hear anything on Alltel deploying LTE or getting the iPhone 5?

Is Alltel going to stay above water or be gobbled by a bigger player?
Have you read the forum rules lately?

I still have 3 lines on Alltel (Upstate SC)

I wish I knew more about the future of the company as well,
lots of people that used to know Alltel are long gone..........
CDMA....Coming soon to a tower near you!
Alltel user since September 5, 2006 - I'm proud to still be with them !!!

Well, I could point out that GSM coverage is substandard in most of NC and SC for a start, because there are two CDMA carriers in the 850 band, with 700 on AT&T not coming until 2013. I can understand getting beat by Verizon on LTE. If AT&T is rolling out LTE in your neck of the woods before Alltel is... to quote Don Meridith, "turn out the lights, the party is over."

Michael Pryor is in over his head. If only the FCC would reverse the AT&T/Dobson order with LTE becoming the dominant standard, you would see more competition.

My wife contract is running out in of November, and I will hop ship at that time. The roaming data issues, and old phones are driving me away. Verizon just put up a new tower in my town, and should have G4 in the near future.

I don't see it getting any better unless they sell quickly. Their customer base is Southern Illinois is shrinking quickly.

In their conference call for Q2 2012, ATN stated they'd start LTE deployment in 2013 "most likely" which isn't exactly a ringing endorsement of wanting to move forward and compete. They also sounded like they were BSing everyone on the iPhone, saying they'd like to have it but not making any concrete statements regarding availability. Even if they get it somehow and get bent over by Apple to offer it, what LTE network are they going to run it on?

    Absolute idiots.

I really like alltels network in southern illinois as far as coverage. i get better reception where i live with alltel then with verizon or ant other network. alltel really is becoming disappointing with their selection of phones. they at least could offer unlimited data still and throttle speeds at a certain point. i think alltel will remain because it is really the best option for man people, but as far as growth, there will be none.

    I really miss Alltel

Sadly I think the days of regional carriers that offer coverage and price are slipping away.

I recall just a decade ago, Alltel and Centennial Wireless were the hot items in Southern Louisiana. Verizon bought Alltel, Sprint bought Nextel, and Verizon bought Centennial Wireless. Also, Cingular bought AT&T AWS (the old AT&T wireless); their GSM service got very popular while all the other carriers were doing the acquisition dance.

It's been an interesting ride in southern Louisiana, nobody wants this market

Alltel brought a lot of people under their umbrella with that calling circle plan.

...and somehow my carrier--KTC PACE--remained standing as an independent local carrier after all that bloodshed.

The net effect is everybody is happy with their new smartphones, but nobody is happy with their new cell phone bills

I'm still here. Southern Illinois has some pretty good coverage thanks to First Cellular. I'm grandfathered in with unlimited data and a cheaper plan.
I don't really see the iphone ever making it to Alltel but I think they'd have to start making the switch to LTE since ATN was in the business of having towers where others didn't and made money off roaming agreements. Better technology would mean more roaming money.
My only real complaints about service is that it slows to a crawl when it storms and everyone is checking for weather updates, or during wide spread Mediacom outages. And Sprint data roaming is very painful.

I'm still on Alltel, though I think that will change soon if I'm happy with Page Plus. I'm in a somewhat rural part of Ohio and CDMA is king here, and Alltel is still active here. I'm not sure how much longer though, it seems many people are switching to Verizon contracts. A lot of now is the lack of phones, people want iPhones, and the latest Androids, etc. and can't get them on Alltel.

With these subscriber losses, I think Alltel, may be short lived.

I am amazed that the new Alltel is still around myself. I have used their towers on occasion; my Verizon prepaid phone defaults to Alltel when in Alltel areas (prepaid phone is on the very old $0.15/min plan). Voice coverage worked fine when I went through southwest Georgia with the phone.

Alltel is still viable in those parts because of Verizon's high prices and the lack of AT&T service in rural areas. But if Alltel sits and do nothing, it will have VZW AND AT&T eating its lunch.
