Feature Phone Contract with unlocked smart phone

    Hello All,

I've had the same EnV2 for years now and it's starting to die. I can buy a cheap Palm Pixi or somesuch on amazon for less than it costs to buy a feature phone from verizon. I'm wondering if I can activate such a phone, but stay on my same contract. I have data blocked, but the Palm has wifi capabilities, so I can still use its smart-features when I'm home, at work, at the grocery store, at church, etc.

Will verizon let me activate such a phone without causing me to upgrade? Do they check when you trade devices on your "MyVZW" account?

Thanks for the help. I haven't had to deal with cell phone stuff in years.

As long as you will be using a Verizon branded phone, it won't be a problem to activate the phone. Keep in mind that you might be required to update your data feature even if you don't buy the phone from Verizon. Smart phones are required to have a data feature.
Don't make me turn this car around.....

Last time I asked, they said a data capable phone requires a data plan.

Right, any smart phone including Palm will require a data add-on.

You will have to pay for data. However if the phone is dying, and if you have insurance, it may be covered under insurance. So for the price of the deductible, they'll ship you a refurb of your current phone or something comparable(in theory).

Are you out of contract? If so, look into page plus. They allow Verizon smartphones to be activated without a data plan. They piggyback off of VZW's network so you will get the same coverage. Their $40 unlimited talk and text plan paired with a $40 Palm from Amazon is a good match.

If you don't mind eBay, you could go that route to find another feature phone and skip the data plan altogether. I don't know if Verizon even has any decent feature phones nowadays though, but I'm sure a Google and/or Howard Forums search would help with that.

So you finally decide to get a smartphone? My advice is to leave Verizon asap. Someone already suggested page plus which is good. I also recommend jumping to others prepaid carriers that do not require data. Staying in Verizon will be very frustrating to us non data users.

    Again leave Verizon asap.
