5 Mbps in CT, 250 kbps in NYC... WTF AT&T?

On Thursday I went down to NYC to see the windows, Christmas Tree in Rockefeller, 5th Ave, etc. I expected to have this super-fast HSPA+ that I was hearing about in NYC, but no, that wasn't the case. I guess all the whining about AT&T in NYC is justified.

The data speeds dropped to about 500kbps somewhere around Stamford, and continued to go down. There were a few places in NYC that I managed to get upwards of 3mbps, including outside the Apple Store (gee, I wonder why?). Speeds seemed to be all over the place, from 0 to 3ish mbps, with some tests coming in well under 1mbps. GCT went from 3mbps in the morning around 10am, to 240kbps around the 4pm rush.

To make matters worse, there was no data service in Times Square, Rockefeller Center, or the first and second floors of Macy's. All the while I had at least 3 bars, except for in the M&M store in Times Square, where I had one. ONE BAR AT&T? Seriously? In THE Times Square? In Manhattan? At that point I tried to get the attwifi hotzone, but I never was able to pick it up (I tried it only inside buildings to be fair).

My favorite Speedtest was in front of the Christmas Tree (Rockefeller Center) that showed 0.00 down and 0.00 up.

Ok to be fair, 250kbps data doesn't materially degrade the user experience of the iPhone 4S over 5mbps service, and only a geek like me would ever know or care that the network was performing at 1/40th of what it is capable of. However, there were several instances where I wanted to look stuff up on Google Maps or the internet to see where things were, and I had to walk a block away from the crowds to get usable data. That did materially affect the usefulness of the iPhone 4S. I also was at the most congested tourist traps with everyone and their brother uploading pics of them next to the Christmas Tree or in Times Square a couple days before Christmas, putting an extreme load on the UMTS system and it's backhaul that's probably not typical even for NYC and it's tourist traps.

Also, I'll admit, I don't know how Verizon's EVDO would have performed, and their LTE network is an unfair comparison, since it has relatively few users, greenfield spectrum, and a high spectral efficiency. Still, it's kind of ridiculous in this day and age to not have good data service throughout Manhattan.

All that being said, if I lived or worked down there, or was there a lot, and if those speeds actually are typical of Manhattan, I'd probably be rocking a Moto Android phone on Verizon's 4G LTE network. Having an iPhone in Manhattan is kind of hard.

It's far from hard data, but I have screenshots of the Speedtests if anyone is so curious as to see them, but here are the test results I got:

    0.72/0.33 Stamfordish (train)
    0.20/0.08 The Bronx (train)
    3.12/0.09 GCT
    3.36/0.68 Herald Square
    NO DATA Macy's 1st and 2nd floor
    0.84/0.03 West Side around 34th
    NO DATA Times Square
    0.00/0.00 Rockefeller Center
    NO DATA Rockefeller Center
    2.30/0.46 Apple Store, 5th Ave
    0.24/0.03 GCT

    They were all 3-5 bars.

    EDIT: Clarity

No one ever knows until they actually go to NYC and experience it for themselves. Until then, all the complaining is just whining and exaggeration.

    Sounds similar to downtown Chicago.

What is/isn't AT&T doing in dense urban metros!?

Is demand really outstripping capacity like that/this!?

Verizon has issues in downtown Chicago too. I don't know about NYC. I haven't been there with a Verizon phone.
Have you read the forum rules lately?

You've seen my screenshots from NYC on Verizon. No issues here, whatsoever.

And you mentioned that you don't know about NYC, never been here with a Verizon phone. Anyway, the OP is talking about NYC not Chicago.
    So there you have it.

On a side note, the tone of this forum is getting incredibly hostile. Can't we all just get along?
