WiFi/UMA on TMO - now Completely FREE

According to this article, TMO's UMA/wifi is now totally free and does not even count against your bucket of minutes:

I called TMO prepaid CS to see if this also applies to prepaid accounts with an UMA enabled phone....they said yes! I will test out later today on an old prepaid account and BB Bold [and Samsung t339] that I have at home and report back if different.

Hate to tell you, but it's been totally free for at least three years! That's when I first used it with a 6086. It was also right about then that they dropped the $10/mo charge, you could no longer choose that service as an option.

I think people who aren't on unlimited plans do notice the minutes come out of their pkg. There have been too many posts saying that to say otherwise. I can't say that first hand, tho.
GoogleVoice (domestic call forwarding and cheap intl. calls) Use GV to give us a "home" number in a 2nd location
8 T-Mobile lines - Unlimited talk and text, data. TM One plan. Get $10/mo. rebate on 7 lines for low data use. Net cost about $185-190/mo. We haven't had a landline in more than 17 years.

I have to (partially) correct myself. When I started using the service I was already on an unlimited talk plan. I realized this today. So, yes, it came out of my bucket of minutes, but it was bottomless. That Customer Loyalty plan was pretty rare when I got it for $50/mo, I think, not much Unlimited then. Now, it's common, so even if TM was still charging for the privilege to make UMA minutes free, a lot of customers would get them free anyway.

I think at that time, summer 2008 they weren't even offering the $10 deal and they no longer had "wi fi calling" as a phone selection option.

At least someone at TM realized they had a unique service and they didn't have to invest another dollar in setup costs.

When I moved back to my parent's house to take care of them, I found my Nokia 9290 dropped a lot of calls. It's real fringe. A friend gave me his 6086 and the UMA solved that. So, it's not just for free calling, for sure. When that phone crapped, I first got a Nokia 9300a and then got the 9300b. The former has wifi, but the latter had a much better RF front end. Rarely drops. Well, dropped. It died four days ago. I'm replacing it with the Mytouch slide (rooted) because of this fringe crap. Not risking buying a phone and getting a low performer. Gotta have that UMA, and why not?

I know when I called to inquire about UMA/free wifi calling about a week ago, the rep swore it wasn't available. Just said that the wifi calling feature on my G2 was for reception only in bad recp areas with available hotspots. Does this depend on the plan?

Call loyalty (cancel from main menu). I just got free wifi added to 4 of my grandfathered family plan lines.

UMA/Wi-fi calling is there automatically on any phone with the feature. See www.umatoday.com for a list with specs. That's for the whole world, so you need to look for yours, or US models.

Whether the use of UMA is free or not just depends on your plan, unlimited minutes or not? I'm referring to just using a phone w/o getting the now-free Unlimited Wi-fi Calling minutes added onto the account.

Of course, that's for postpaid. Not available, presumably, for prepaid accounts. But hey, prove me wrong.

Unlimited talk on 4G Monthly? No need for the post-paid freebie.
