iReb worked for me. Try "Recboot" as well!

If you have access to a Windows machine, you can try this:

    http://blog.zaneer.com/?p=13

It worked for everyone that posted on there except me. Here is what happened to me:

My mother was updating the firmware of her iPhone and somehow the cord got disconnected from the computer. So she turned the phone off and on again, and it’s been in recovery mode ever since.

We tried the software that's posted on the blog post above and we did exactly as it said. We plugged her phone into the computer, launched iTunes, and then launched iPhoneRecoveryFix.exe. When we launched it, here is what it said:

    —————-
PLEASE PLUG IPHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER AND OPEN ITUNES APPLICATION

Press any key to continue . . .
    —————-

Then we pressed any key, and here is what it said:

    —————-
PLEASE PLUG IPHONE TO YOUR COMPUTER AND OPEN ITUNES APPLICATION

Press any key to continue . . .
[INFO] Waiting for a device in Recovery mode to connect . .
    _

    —————-

Right after the app gave us that message, her iPhone would show the recovery mode image for 2 seconds (the one is posted on that blog post with the iTunes icon and the cable), and then it would switch to the gray apple that you see when it boots up. That would show for 2 seconds, and then it would go back to the recovery mode image again. We waited for about 10 minutes, and that’s all it did.

We first tried it on a Windows Vista 32-bit machine, and we got the above results. Then we tried it on a Windows 7 64-bit machine, and we still got the same results. Tried doing a hard reset (hold down power and home button for 10 seconds>let go of power button and continue to hold down the home button for 10 more seconds>let go of home butt0n), and then we tried this fix again. Still got the same results.

My mother didn’t sleep last night because she is worried about losing all of her data and contacts that she hasn’t backed up since October.

She has a 3GS running iOS 4 (not sure which version, but it's not the current one).

I was going to try TinyUmbrella, but I saw some people had issues with it. One guy said it made it worse. Is it safe to try? And do I need the exact iOS version that the phone is running to run ireb like c22002 stated? Any way around that?

    TIA

Why would they recover your data? You can ask, but it's your responsibility to back up your data.

I'm not saying they would, but as a rule, Apple tends to go the extra mile in business, which is one of the reasons why they are so successful.

The reason I ask is that if they won't, then there is no point in going down there since restoring it is a no brainer. She wants her data back.

Anyone else have any personal experience or any links to numerous comments on personal experience with either TinyUmbrella or ireb getting an iPhone out of the infamous recovery loop?

If your iPhone is stuck in recovery mode, DO THIS: (ON Screen USB pointing to a CD with a Music Note).

    1. Make sure your iTunes is up to data, if not re-download itunes.

    2. after re-installing ITUNES, plug your iphone via USB into your computer. ITUNES will automatically pick it up and a pop up box will probally say that your IPHONE is in recovery mode would you like to restore?

    3. Click the restore tab.
Note - If ITUNES if out of date, this will not work.
Note - Do not do this over WIFI
Note - Do not interrupt the restore
Note - If you did not make a previous back up, your IPHONE will restore back to the factroy settings.

All this happened to me, fortunately I made a back up. I hope this helps.

Use RecoveryTool Fix Recovery and iTunes to try a restore or take it to the apple store.

The original iPhone only runs GSM, which is no longer used by AT&T Mobility.

Well, since recovery mode and DFU mode can't help fix your iPhone stuck in recovery mode. You'd better contact Apple for help, or you may have to use a repair tool to fix it yourself.
